Chapter 25

Earth, 2016

"Are you all ready to leave?" Mister Harrington asks us.

We all nod and as we are about to climb into the school bus, Peter comes running towards us, exclaiming.

"Guys."

"Hey, it's Peter," says one of the students.

"I was hoping I could rejoin the team," he says.

"No, no way. You can't quit on us, stoll up and be welcomed back by everyone," Flash replies, angrily.

"Hey, welcome back! Flash, you're back to first alternate," says Mister Harrington, patting Peter on the back as we chuckle slightly.

We get into the bus, and everyone is excited to go to Washington, D.C., but to be honest, I'm kind of sad. It reminds me of when everything was easier, and I was peacefully living with Uncle Steve. As we're not a large group, we each take our own seat in the bus, and I sit behind MJ. Peter walks in and we make eye contact, but I look down and he sits further away with Ned. He hasn't even thanked me after I saved him and Ned from complete humiliation at the party, and we have completely stopped talking to each other since then. The ride goes by quickly, as Liz keeps drilling everyone with questions. As usual, I don't answer many questions. I still answer more often than Flash does, though.

The next morning, we head to the competition, and Ned comes to me:

"Have you heard from Peter?"

"Why would I, of all people, hear from Peter? I'm sure he's having more conversations with Flash than with me."

"Don't worry, he's just been feeling jealous ever since he saw that video of you and Tom dancing at the party," Ned answers before putting his hands on his mouth, "I didn't mean to say that."

I roll my eyes, why would he be jealous? He broke up with me, and he's crushing on Liz. Ned goes somewhere else, and we get to the competition. Liz is freaking out, because Peter is nowhere to be seen. Now that I think of it, he also wasn't at the pool last night either. I hope he's okay, but it's also none of my business anymore. We don't have time to wait for him as the competition begins, and Flash replaces Peter. We easily win the competition as I cheer for everyone. The teachers seem to have forgotten that Peter is not with us since, right after the competition, we take the bus to head to the Washington Monument. As I've already seen it with Uncle Steve, I decide to stay outside with MJ, who is refusing to celebrate something that was built by slaves. We both make small talk, until my phone rings. Weird, what does Peter want? I don't answer it, but as he keeps calling me back, I eventually walk away from MJ, before picking up.

"Where are you?" I ask.

"On my way back, I need you to stop Ned. He has something in his backpack, and it can't be exposed to radiation!"

"What does he have?"

"A Chitauri core!"

"Okay, I'm on it!" I reply, hanging up as I start running towards the entrance.

People stare at me, but I keep running. When I reach Ned, I see that he is already on the other side of the metal detector, grabbing his bag. Shit. I turn to the security guy to ask, pointing to where the backpack just went through:

"That makes radiations, right?"

He nods, as I sigh, quickly walking through the detector myself. A red light goes on, and I realize that I still have my gun tucked between my back and my pants, as I took the habit of doing. Oh no. I quickly make it invisible before throwing it under the counter. I'll pick it up later. The guy comes back a few seconds later with a handheld metal detector, and he starts passing it in front of me. He stops at my boot. Shit. Forgot about that. I freeze as he looks up at me and asks, reaching for his gun:
