Day Twenty | Wednesday | December 14th
Roman stood just outside Wren and Arthur's office waiting for them to finish talking to Emile. Today was the day that Roman's 'mentorship' with Remus began and he wasn't so sure he was ready for that.
He was scared, he had to admit. He still had nightmares about that week in that dark and scary basement in the nearly perfect house. They all did really, but Patton and Logan had nightmares about what they were shown and Virgil had nightmares about... well Virgil didn't talk about those nightmares too much. But Roman had nightmares not about what he was shown but just about everything else about that week.
He had nightmares about seeing Virgil trapped in Deceit's arms and about Patton passing out in Logan's arms. He had nightmares about his normally so calm and stoic friend sitting terrified and dissociated on the ground. He had nightmares about Virgil flinching or holding his head in pain every time he didn't move back up the stairs fast enough. Of Deceit and Remus walking down those steps to spend two hours showing them horrible things and reading their most inner thoughts before spending even more telling all of them, though mostly him, just how much they didn't deserve Virgil. And how they were a danger or out to get him or overall just bad for him.
Roman hated to admit that sometimes he thought back to them and wondered if they were right...
Roman already knew Virgil was too good for him.
Virgil was way too sweet and kind to him. He didn't deserve a boyfriend who dealt with his problems. He didn't deserve a boyfriend who was so smart and understanding and determined to do good. Or who was so handsome and adorable and wonderful and funny. He didn't deserve Virgil... Roman knew that already. But... was Roman really bad for him?
Virgil, of course, often denied these thoughts and told him if anybody didn't deserve anybody it was Virgil. Roman could have scoffed at that idea. Why would Virgil say that? He was amazing, he was wonderful. He deserved all the best things. Roman didn't need anyone reminding him of this, he already knew. He was already well aware.
Still, regardless of whether he thought he was ready or not, he had gotten out of bed and got ready for the day. He pulled on a jacket as well, and hid away a key chain shaped like a crown that Virgil had gotten him and that he liked to fidget with when he was nervous. He had sent Virgil a few texts, said good morning to Patton and Logan, and then headed off. And now here he was, waiting for Wren, Arthur, and Emile so he could go talk to his boyfriend's weird and possibly insane adoptive father.
Their meeting ended all too quickly and soon enough, the door was opening and the three were leaving the room and making their way toward him. "Ready Roman?" Emile asked, Roman nodded and Emile gave him a small smile, "You don't have to do this you know, it is in no way required."
"It's fine," Roman assured as he pushed off the wall he was leaning on, "You said it was supposed to help, so I'll do it."
Emile hummed disconcertingly before nodding and heading down the hall, leading the way down the maze that made up this crazy place. Arthur ended up staying behind in the office, he had work to do apparently. Wren fell into step next to Roman though and for most of the trip neither said anything to each other, they just walked in awkward silence before Wren sighed, "Emile said you were doing this for Virgil?"
"Oh, yeah." Roman nodded, "Last year was rough for him, seeing Remus and Deceit is...." Roman trailed off, he didn't really know how to finish.
"Okay, well first of all, Virgil isn't gonna want you to do something you don't want to do. Or that is gonna affect your mental health badly." Wren stated with an eye roll, "Second, Virgil doesn't need you to do this. You talking to Remus isn't gonna protect Virgil when he's with Janus."
