Thirty Days After Escape | Wednesday | September 24th

Remus Sanders-Green had his arm linked around the man next to him, his head gently resting on his shoulder as he stared down at the table in front of him. Janus was the man next to him of course, both of them seated in uncomfortable wooden seats with hardbacks and peeling black paint. The arm that wasn't linked with Remus had been placed over a thick folder that sat in the center of the table. Janus was seated between Remus and a lawyer, staring up ahead like a determined soldier.

The courtroom was packed with people, cameras had been set up on the sides of the room. People sat in the benches, thrown in like a large group of sardines. The jury watched the lawyers with intense eyes as if allowing their attention to stray was some sort of sin or bring the end of the world. The judge was stoic faced as he looked between the lawyer in front of him, and the two men standing trial.

This trial had gone on for three days now. You'd think these people would want to decide the fate of two supervillains a little quicker than this. But no, three days now Remus and Janus had been brought into this room, and at night they were placed in different holding cells across the room from each other.

Remus hated that part the most, he hadn't slept without Janus for nearly two years now. He got nightmares much like Virgil did whenever he didn't. So even though he and Janus both had their own rooms in the house, they didn't really use both at the same time. Not unless they had a guest over or had had a really bad fight. And even then, most of the time if they had a fight one of them would just end up sleeping on the floor beside the bed, just in case. He had barely slept since they had turned themselves in, he was starting to regret keeping Virgil from the Prince boy whenever he woke up from nightmares. It was karma, cruel, and bitter karma.

Yesterday they had seen him, the Prince boy. He and the one whose father served in the air force. They had come in and watched the trial for about an hour before leaving. They hadn't seen them since, not that either of them had wanted to see those two. They had wanted to see Virgil. He was the reason they were here after all.

They weren't blaming him of course. This wasn't his fault, they should have listened to him when he kept saying he was happy with them. They both knew he wasn't as happy as a villain. They were just afraid that if Virgil started befriending the heroes, then he would become a hero too. They would never be able to hurt Virgil if he became a hero, they wanted to keep him on their side. They wanted him to be their family again. They loved Virgil, he was the closest thing to a son they had ever had. And in the eight years, they had known him, he had changed in so many ways. He wasn't the scared little kid he had been when they had found him outside their house anymore. He was more than that, he had been for a while now.

But yes, he was the reason they were here. They knew that Virgil and his friends would never feel completely safe if they were still running free, so they had turned themselves in. The two may not have been the best parents, they may not have had the best methods, but Virgil would always come first. And if his happiness meant risking that they couldn't be together, then that's what needed to happen.

"Remus," Janus whispered to him, gently shrugging his shoulder to get his attention. Remus looked up, his eyes were red with lack of sleep and unshed tears. "Time to stand up my love. They're coming back with the sentence now" Remus only nodded as he and Janus rose to their feet with the rest of the room as the jury returned. A moment later the judge came in as well, a paper in his hand.

"Has the jury come to a decision?" the judge asked as he got comfortable in his seat.

One of the jury members stood up, clearing their throat before speaking, "The jury finds Remus and Janus Sanders-Green guilty of all charges"
