“They’re gonna end up together.”
George Washington looked at his wife, his eyebrows knitted together. “What do you mean?”
“Thomas and Angelica,” she said as if that was explanation enough, his eyes drifted over to the middle schoolers huddled together probably watching some youtube video.
“Still confused.”
Martha sighed, like he was the problem, well excuse him for not understanding vague explanations. “Thomas and Angelica, they’re gonna end up together.”
George laughed because of course, his wife would already have some image of their student’s lives in the future painted in her head. It did help that they knew these students exponentially better considering they were their son Alex’s friends (Angelica more than Thomas. Thomas and Alexander were kind of frenemies, emphasis on the enemies part).
However, no matter how many dinners they had eaten at the Washington’s table George really didn’t see how it was possible for her to already know that. They weren’t even in High School yet for crying out loud.
“How can you know that?” He asked and really he should know by now not to doubt his wife because she just had a knack for this sort of thing. But still.
Martha shrugged and George knew he wasn’t going to get a real answer. “I just do.”
“Last time I checked you don’t have the ability to see into the future,” George remarked with a smile on his face.
Martha smirked, “if I did you’d be the last person to know.”
He put a hand to his chest feigning hurt. “And why is that?”
“Because you’d probably use it to bet on football games”
“Fair, I guess.”
“Trust me they’re going to end up together.” She stated.
George looked back at them, they were still watching the phone and the only thing visible was their curls. With a content sigh, he realized he couldn’t confidently say they would end up together and he couldn’t confidently say they wouldn't.
He could see it happening though, they seemed to be closer to each other than anyone else in the friend group, obviously excluding Angelica’s sister(They were sisters after all). But then again they were kids and he had been principal at a Middle School long enough to know that crushes at this age rarely went anywhere.
But his wife was certain and who was he to go against that?
“We’ll just have to see how it plays out,” he muttered to himself.
…
He was nervous.
No that was an understatement, Thomas didn't think there was a word in the English dictionary that described what he was feeling right now. It was like he was drunk on anxiety, he could barely even function.
Thomas didn't think that was an entirely unreasonable feeling considering he was currently on one knee, a velvet box with a diamond ring in his hand, and Angelica, the woman the ring was for, was completely silent.
He gulped, maybe he had misread the last two years, maybe she wasn't ready for marriage, or maybe she didn't want to marry him.
"Angelica?" He managed to get out her name and only her name.
Angelica shook her head as if to shake away whatever was keeping her silent. "Sorry, sorry." She said in a rush. "Yes, I will marry you."
Thomas sucked in a sharp breath and then smiled. "Great, that is more than great actually."
Angelica laughed as she leaned in to kiss him.
Great.
…He had sort of forgotten about the bet. It had been what? Fifteen years ago? Of course, he had known they were together, the two of them were a son and daughter at this point. But the bet had completely evaded his mind.
That was until Thomas had called to tell him and Martha that he had proposed. And even then it had taken a few minutes for George to recall the bet, he had been too caught up in feeling honored that Thomas had personally called to tell him about the engagement.
But he remembered now, he also remembered that later on that day Martha had added twenty dollars to reward whoever won the bet.
Damn.
He was about to be twenty dollars poorer.
