A/N: POV: It's summer and I hate the heat.
Angelica collapsed onto the wooden steps, seconds later Thomas followed her, dropping the same way she had.
She roughly pushed the hair that had fallen out of her ponytail back.
"I won,'' she breathed out.
Thomas gulped, "I tripped-tripped over a rock," he said, sounding breathless too.
She sighed harshly, a mix of exhaustion and irritation. "It doesn't matter, I still won."
"But I tripped! That's not fair!"
She turned her head to him, a scowl on her face. "It's not my fault you tripped, I won the race."Thomas scrunched up his face, ready to yell at her or maybe call her names,(they did that a lot), but then he stopped, realization dawning on his sweaty face. "I've gotta get home," he said.
"It's summer though."
Thomas huffed, "and I got to stay out longer, but when the street lights come on I've gotta go home." He stood up, hopping down from the steps, he turned to her, a smudge of dirt on his face that Angelica hadn't bothered telling him about. "See ya tomorrow.""Bye, Thomas," Angelica said, barely finishing her sentence before he was running down the street to his home. "I still won," she mumbled to herself before walking into her house.
...
Angelica settled on the steps of her porch, it was her first time being out of the house in two days, with how hot it had been she preferred staying in her air-conditioned home. The sun had set, the sky dark, stars twinkling, and yet it was still warm. Though this was the sort of weather she favored, when it felt more like a warm hug instead of a hot oven.
She breathed in the night air. The sound of crickets playing in the background, and the hot air settling into something cool felt good.
Angelica sighed softly as a cool breeze blew through the air. The sound of footsteps found its way to her ears, her head tilted up, the faint glow of the porch light helping her enough to make out a tall figure. Stepping out of the darkness and into the light, her lips curled into a smile
"Thomas, what are you doing here?"
He stepped closer to her, a smile on his face too. "I was bored, thought I'd surprise you." He sat down on the step below her, settling in-between her legs, Angelica wrapped her arms around his shoulders from behind, resting her chin on his head.
She smiled to herself and pressed a gentle kiss on the top of his head, so gentle he didn't even notice.
"You know the streetlights are on, sure you don't need to be home right now?" Angelica asked with a smirk.
"I'm sixteen, that rule doesn't apply."
She rolled her eyes, her smile growing wider. "Your parents aren't home, huh?"
"Nope," he murmured, and then the comfortable silence was back, both of them content with each other's silent company.
The stillness of the world, the crickets, and the wind playing in the background like a lullaby... It was all very peaceful, she felt relaxed, like she was allowed to make mistakes and Thomas wouldn't hold it against her.
Angelica could live like this, in this world of peaceful bliss, Thomas by her side. And maybe she was probably far too young to be feeling and thinking this way but she couldn't bring herself to care right now.
