George Washington hates parties. He supposes they can be fun, but they aren't really his scene. He’d much rather stay at home with his wife Martha and read a book. Anything other than going to a ball. So it came as a surprise when he finds he's actually enjoying himself at this ball. He thinks it has something to do with Martha being here with him though.
Martha is like him. She would rather stay home and read a good book than go to an event like this. And usually, she does stay home, she has no qualms about not attending an event she has been invited to.
George on the other hand is too kind to just not go, so he ends up spending quite some time at social gatherings like these, while his Martha stays home. But this time is different because Martha is here with him, surprisingly.
Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson are attending the same party and George knows from past experiences that that never goes well, so he had begged Martha to come along with him.
She had only agreed after he had promised they could get another dog. They already have two. But he decided having another dog was worth it if Martha would come along with him to keep him from going mad.
It seems that Martha tagging along was quite unnecessary though. George notices that Thomas is too wrapped up in Angelica Schuyler to even pick a fight with Hamilton much to his pleasure.
“You know I’m sort of disappointed that Thomas has decided not to start picking fights with Hamilton. I was quite looking forward to a legendary Jefferson versus Hamilton shouting match.” Martha says as they come back from the dance floor, hand in hand. He's able to dance now because his wife is here with him and Hamilton and Jefferson aren’t arguing.
“Believe me, you are not missing out on anything,” George laughs. “Besides, I think Thomas has found something that interests him more than arguing with Hamilton.” He glances at Thomas who is in the corner of the ballroom engaging in a conversation with Angelica Schuyler.
The two of them have been in that corner for the whole night, not even stopping to dance like he’s seen Angelica do so many times for the men that were bold enough to talk to her.
The oldest Schuyler is an intimidating one, enough to make a man like him tread lightly on certain matters when speaking to Angelica. She is not one to hold back and she always voices her opinion no matter who she is talking to. George respects that about her.
“They would make a nice match.” Martha muses.
“They would. Their kids would have the most incredible hair.”
“A head full of gorgeous curls.” Martha smiles. “I’ve decided they have to get married and have kids.”
George chuckles, his Martha is quite the romantic. “Don’t you think you're getting a little ahead of yourself?”
“Maybe I am, but they definitely like each other. And it would be a waste of genes for them not to get together.” Martha says. “Oh, look, they’re finally getting on the dance floor.”
George removes his gaze from Martha’s face and sees that Thomas and Angelica are, in fact, on the dance floor. The way they move together is amazing, they’re in perfect sync, like they were made for each other.
He agrees with his wife now. He thinks they would make a lovely couple and maybe someone like Angelica could keep Thomas in check.
Times like these are the reason he never disagrees with Martha. How could he not agree with her instincts on things like this? After all, he is married to the love of his life because Martha followed her instincts and married him.
