Hospitals

Thomas hates hospitals. They are so cold and gloomy. They always smell like chemicals, sickness, and death. The atmosphere is just terrible all around.

It also doesn't help that his parents died in one. That's really why he's so afraid of them. So hearing Angelica that was in the hospital didn't do any good for him. She ended up there the same way his parents did, a terrible car accident, some drunk driver hit Angelica's car, and it was a really bad crash.

Just like his parent's.

He's pacing in the waiting room, trying to keep calm for Angelica's sister's sake. He's failing, but it's the thought that counts.

"Thomas, why don't you take a seat," Eliza says to him. He turns to look at her and she's carding her fingers through Peggy's hair while she sleeps. Something that Angelica does to comfort them.

Eliza's face is tear-stained and her eyes are red and puffy, he imagines that's what he looks like at the moment.

"I'm fine." He says and she frowns even more.

She doesn't believe him but she leaves it alone and he's thankful for that. He doesn't want to cry in front of them and he's afraid that if he has to speak anymore the tears will just come spilling out.

He just wants Angelica to be okay, he can't lose another person to a hospital. He supposes that's where a lot of people lose people they love, but he just can't lose her.

Not here.

Not now.

Not ever.

"Eliza," he hears a voice call. He recognizes that voice, it's a familiar voice, but his brain isn't working right. So he can't put a face to the it.

In all honesty, he doesn't care though, he just wants the doctor to come out and tell him that Angelica is alive and that she is going to be okay, more than okay. But that hasn't happened yet, and it's been five hours, and he's becoming more worried every second he doesn't know how Angelica is doing.

He feels a hand on his shoulder and he turns to see his friend James Madison red in the face, although he can't tell if it's from his allergies or from crying. He'd become close to Angelica just like Thomas had these past three years.

"Thomas, you alright?" He asks. I know he means well but that's honestly such a stupid question, he thinks. No, I'm not alright. The he love of my life is lying on a table in an operating room.

"I'm fine James." His second lie tonight that, once again, nobody believes.

James sighs, but goes to take a seat next to Eliza and who Thomas is just now realizing is here, Alexander. Peggy is still sleeping, her head still lay in Eliza's lap. Boy, is he jealous of the youngest Schuyler right now, he wishes he could sleep. But he's afraid that if he sleeps he'll have nightmares and he just can't take that, not now.
...

It's been six hours now and still no word from the doctor. Peggy's awake now and Thomas is still pacing through the lobby. He's restless, the only thing he can do is pace. It's the only thing keeping him from breaking down.

"Family of Angelica Schuyler." A voice calls and his head snaps up when he hears Angelica's name. Peggy, Alexander and Eliza get up from the chairs and all four of them meet the doctor in the middle of the lobby.

"Is she okay?" Peggy asks, her eyes wide with fear and at that moment she reminds him of Angelica, their eyes always get so big when they are scared. They sort of resemble a deer caught in the headlights.

The doctor nods and they all let out sighs of reliefs, even James who is still seated in the chairs. "She's gonna be okay. She had some abdominal bleeding but we fixed that up. Two ribs are broken along with her arm but they should heal fine."

She's okay.

The doctor confirmed she's going to live. They were such simple words, but they mean the world to him.

"Can we see her?" Alexander asks.

"Yes of course. Three at a time though." Thomas turns to look at James, he knows that he is also worried about Angelica.

"I'll stay behind. Just make sure you tell her I'll visit as soon as I can."

"Yeah, I'll stay behind too." Alexander says and in the back if his mind Thomas wonders why.

"Thank you."

"Okay, follow me, I'll show you to her room." They follow the doctor in silence, anticipation dripping from all three of them. They just can't wait to see her and to hug her.

And Thomas is going to tell her he loves her. Those six hours were hell and the possibility of her dying without her knowing just how much Thomas loves her was crippling. It outweighed the risk of her not feeling the same way.

They reach her door and the doctor places a hand on the handle. "Fair warning, she's a little groggy." All three of them nod eagerly and the doctor opens the door. He lets them in. "I'll leave you to it." He says before closing the door and walking off.

"I've been waiting for you guys to come up." Angelica smiles, it's a tired smile but it's a real smile and those are the best kind.

"And we've been waiting for you to get out of surgery." Eliza shoots back and Angelica gives a little laugh and the sound warms his heart.

"Gosh, we were so worried about you." Peggy cries and she rushes to Angelica to hug her. He sees Angelica wince a little when she embraces Peggy (he would have missed it if his eyes weren't so glued on Angelica) but she ignores it so he does too.

Eliza walks to them and joins the hug and Thomas smiles at the sight. The sisters are always so sweet. Angelica has this especially sweet and caring side reserved for Eliza and Peggy only.

"I'm okay guys," Angelica whispers to them. They let go of her and turn to Thomas with expectant eyes, only then he realizes he's been silent this whole time. "Hey, guys, can you go get me something to drink? My mouth is so dry." Angelica asks and both the sister's smirk. He wonders what they know? Do they know he's about to profess his love to their big sister?

"Sure," Peggy eagerly agrees, ready to help her sister in any way.

The sisters give one last look to Angelica and with that, they leave the room, although he swears he saw them give him a thumbs up when they walked past.

"So.. you're okay." He awkwardly smiles, all the confidence he had from earlier was nowhere to be found.

"Yep, I'm alive."

They sit in awkward silence while he works up the courage to pour his heart out to her. God, Thomas, just tell her you love her, he internally screams.

He takes a deep breath and the tiniest bit of courage fills his body. "Angelica I love you, I'm in love with you." He blurts out before the little confidence he's built up can leave him high and dry.

She stares at him and he thinks he's made a mistake and he turns to leave her room. "I love you too." He stops in his tracks when he hears her voice. Did she really just say what he thinks she said? The words he's been wanting to hear for what felt like forever?

He turns around and she's sitting on her bed smiling. "What did you say." He dumbly asks, but he doesn't care he needs confirmation.

"I love you."
