Coretta was nervous. And maybe nervous was an understatement, she did that a lot, downplaying what or how she actually felt. But her nerves were nothing compared to her boyfriends.
She’d never seen him this nervous before. He was usually so calm and collected. But now, now he was a complete mess. He checked the mirror five times in the last three minutes, before that he’d changed his shirt six times, and he spent an ungodly amount of time trying to tame his afro.
It warmed Coretta’s heart a little, seeing how anxious he was to meet her parents. Because she was sure he was the one. She’d never felt like this before, this breath stealing sort of feeling. And it was magical, made her head spin. So, yeah, she was sure Xavier was the one.
“Babe, you ready to go yet?” Coretta asked.
Xavier stumbled out of his bedroom, flipping the light off as he did. “How do I look?” He spun around for her, his arms held awkwardly out at his sides.
She smiled at him. “You look amazing.” She said, the tiniest bit of exasperation seeping into her voice. He had asked her this a hundred and one times. “I told you that already.”
Xavier grinned at her, the dimple on the left side of his cheek showing. “Yeah, but you’re kind of biased.”
Coretta rolled her eyes. “Just get in the damn car.”
…
“I don’t like him.”
Angelica sighed. “Sweetheart, you haven’t even met the boy.”
Thomas folded his arms over his chest and Angelica rolled her eyes at him in her vanity mirror. “Okay, I’m not gonna like him.”
Angelica twisted herself on the stool she was sitting on and fixed him with a half-hearted glare. “You have to at least give him a chance.”
“No, I don’t.” He said petulantly and Angelica swore he was pouting.
She scoffed. “How old are you again?”
“I’m not even gonna dignify that with an answer.”
Angelica’s head titled the side, her lips twisted in a disbelieving sort of smile. Sure she understood where he was coming from for the most part. Coretta was their baby girl, it was hard seeing her grow up, hard knowing that she didn’t need them like she used to.
But she was twenty-two now. They couldn’t hold on forever and they certainly couldn’t have every boyfriend she brought home running for the hills.
Of course, this was the first time Coretta had brought home a boy since high school, and back then that’d sort of been mandatory. No way was her baby girl going to be dating a guy Angelica hadn’t met at least once.
But , since she was seventeen, they’re hadn’t been one guy she decided to bring home. They heard about her occasional dates and then the breakups that hadn’t really left Coretta feeling anything.
So this, this was new and exciting. And Angelica would be damned if she let Thomas ruin it.
…
Coretta didn’t bother knocking no matter how much Xavier wished she would. He just wanted to stall the inevitable but Coretta was too excited to wait any longer. Her parents had to meet him because she was falling and hard. She felt kind of helpless and for once she didn’t mind.
“We’re here!” Coretta called, smirked a little at the way Xavier linked their hands together.
“We’ll be down in a second!” Her dad yelled back.
“Well, since we’re waiting, why don’t you take a look around my childhood home.” She said, turning to Xavier, her heart fluttering a little when she noticed the way he marveled at the place.
He slowly unlinked their fingers and Coretta watched intently as he made his way around the living room, stopping everyone in a while to look at a photo of her as a kid.
“You had big ears when you were a kid.” Xavier laughed.
Coretta turned to gawk at him. “Yeah, well at least I grew into them.”
Xavier grinned as he walked back to her. “Are you implying that I have big ears?”
She wrapped her arms around his neck and stood on her tiptoes to press a chaste kiss to his lips. “If the shoe fits, wear it.”
…
“Are you ready?”
Thomas’s eyes widened, his mouth open a little. “Am I ready? Baby, you’ve been at that vanity for three hours.”
Angelica smiled at him and Thomas tried to ignore the way it made him feel just a little bit dreamy after all these years. She was not going to charm him into taking it easy tonight. He would put Coretta’s boyfriend through the wringer and if he came out on the other side alive, well, then maybe he’d think about giving the kid a smile.
“You never complained before.” Angelica reminded him.
Thomas shrugged, stepping closer to her until there was an inch of space left between them. He brought a hand up to brush a lock of hair behind her ear and then cupped her cheek.
“That’s ‘cause I like watching you get all dolled up.” He said and while that was true his favorite thing was watching her take it all off. Because then she was his Angelica, the side of her only he got to witness.
“Charmer.” She whispered.
“It’s why you married me.” He dipped down to kiss her, his worries about tonight forgotten and Thomas hoped the same went for Angelica.
