The next morning found Alfie sitting besides Stefan in his history class while Mr Tanner droned on and on, even though no one was paying attention.

Not even Alfie himself was paying attention, his thoughts on the phone that was locked in a draw in his room.

When he had gotten home that previous night, he had tried again and again to call his mum, brother and even his dad but the answer was always the same. And that effectively put a damper on his mood, and everyone could tell.

"The battle of Willow Creek too place at the end of the war." Said Mr Tanner, quite loudly in fact, that it snapped Alfie from his thoughts. "In our very own Mystic Falls. How many casualties resulted in this battle?"

Mr Tanner glanced around the room, looking at each and every bored and sleepy faces before taking his pick, "Miss Bennett."

Bonnie looked up from her note pad and saw half the class looking in her direction, "Um...." She drawled, "A Lot? I'm not sure. But, like, a whole lot."

"Cute becomes dum in an instant, Miss Bennett." Mr Tanner said snidely, "Mr Donovan." Mr Tanner turned towards the jock, "Would you like to take this opportunity to overcome your jock stereotype?"

Matt shook his head, "It's okay, Mr Tanner. I'm cool with it." He answered jokingly.

Mr Tanner rolled his eyes sarcastically before turning his gaze onto his next victim, "Alfie, you usually pay attention in this class, how about you?"

Alfie opened his mouth to reply when his sister cut him off, "I'm sorry, I don't know." Alfie rolled his eyes, but kept his mouth shut.

"Actually Elena, I was asking your brother. I'm assuming you don't know either?" He turned to Alfie, who shook his head with a small shrug, "I was willingly to be lenient last year for obvious reasons, Elena, Alfie. But the personal excuses ended with summer break."

Alfie bit his tongue to save himself from snapping at the arrogant teacher. His fist clenched tightly under the table.

Stefan leaned over and placed his hand over his Mates clenched one, and turned his glare to Mr Tanner, "There were 346 casualties, unless you're counting the local civilians." He answered.

"That's correct, Mr..?" Said Mr Tanner, turning towards the seething vampire.

"Salvatore." Stefan answered simply.

"Salvatore." Mr Tanner repeated, "Any relation to the original settlers here at Mystic Falls?"

Alfie turned his hand around, locking his fingers with Stefan's, as Stefan answered the question, "Distant."

"Well, very good." Said Mr Tanner, "Except of course, there were no civilian casualties in this battle."

"Actually, there were 27, sir." Stefan corrected, causing Alice to snigger behind his hand, "Confederate soldiers fired on the church believing it to be housing weapons. And they were wrong. It was a night of great loss. The founders archives are in Civil Hall if you'd like to brush up on your facts. Mr Tanner."

Mr Tanner bit his tongue to stop himself from snapping at the smug teen that had just humiliated him in front of his students and instead decided to carry on with the lesson, pretending it never happened.

Alfie squeezed Stefan's hand, gaining his attention, "Thank you." Alfie whispered.

Stefan's hard gaze softened, "I'll always be there to protect you." He vowed, squeezing his hand back in return.

Alfie blushed and turned his attention to his desk, finding it more interesting. He had never had someone say something like that, to him, with such honesty.

It made his heart beat just that little bit quicker and a warm feeling to settle into his bones.

Little did he know, a certain brunette was blushing as she thought Stefan had showed Tanner up to protect her. Completely forgetting that he's her brothers soulmate. Not that she would care either way.

"Are you still going to the party tonight?" Stefan asked.

Alfie hummed, lifting his head and looking at his soulmate, "Do I have to." He groaned softly, leaning back in his chair.

Stefan chuckled, "No, you don't have to if you don't want to." He reassured, "But, I would like to see you there. And so would Caroline."

Alfie groaned before answering, "Alright, yes, I'll be there. But I'm only having one drink. And I'm not staying long, something bad always happens at parties. Especially the ones here in Mystic Falls."
