"Should I be concerned you're already drinking before me?" Jessica said, sitting down next to the boy. After the failed fashion show her best friend put on, Jessica texted Nate telling him to meet her at a bar she grew to like to talk about stuff. He agreed and was more than happy to see her after the horrible talk he had with Dan.
"Hey Jess." Nate smiled weakly.
"Is everything ok?" Jessica asked the boy as she ordered herself a Cosmopolitan.
Nate sighed, debating whether to tell the girl or not. "No."
Jessica thanked the bartender for her drink. "You wanna talk about it?"
And just with those words, Nate dived right into the story of how his so-called best friend backstabbed him in asking another publisher to publish his story.
"He sounds like a dick." Jessica commented, after hearing the story.
"Yeah. And what sucks is that I thought all this time he was my friend. You know. He... I don't know. It's like he changed the more he hung out with us. I miss the old Dan."
"You were never good with change."
Nate shook his head. "No I wasn't." The two sat in silence. Nate wanted to tell the girl everything. How Sage was more of a distraction than anything.
"What did you want to tell me earlier?" The girl asked.
"Um. I just wanted to say sorry. Again. I feel like that's all I've been saying recently. But I don't want things to be awkward with us. You were once my best friend and I know I probably lost that right a long time ago but, I'm trying."
Jessica nodded. "I know you are. But can you promise me to tell me straight up on things. Don't be around the bush or drag me along just because you feel lonely. I've been through enough to know when someone doesn't want me for me."
Nate nodded. "I will. I'm sorry."
"Stop saying you're sorry Nate. I know you're sorry and I forgiven you. I want you to do something about it."
Nate nodded trying hard to be the man he wants to become for Jessica. A man to be good enough for Jessica. Because she is the only girl he wants.
