Jahseh laid his head against the window as Dwayne smoothly glided through the highway. He felt a weight on his chest. A familiar feeling but this time it seemed twice intense. He stared blankly at the passing cars not really paying attention. Just staring. He’d just been discharged from the hospital after the doctor confirmed he was physically fit to leave. Baby Kentrell was babbling in the back seat cluelessly munching on his tiny fingers. He was born premature because Jahseh had induced his labor but the boy was healthy as it can be. Jahseh however hadn’t held him since three days earlier when he’d woken up and asked to see the little boy.

“-ot listening.Seh! Jahseh!” Dwayne called out branching off from the highway into their street. Jahseh blinked perking up before slowly turning to give his father his attention. “What you thinking about so hard? I been calling you the last three minutes?” Dwayne asked eyes still stuck on the road. Jahseh licked his lips leaning his head back on the window.

“Kentrell.” He mumbled loud enough for the man to hear. Baby Kentrell let out a mewl in the backseat starting to cry. Jahseh shifted his eyes to the rearview mirror staring at the crying toddler a frown forming on his face. He didn’t move or  say anything.

“Reach over and fix his pacifier.” Dwayne suggested with a sigh. Jahseh blinked lifting his head and staring at his father like he didn’t quiet understand what the man had told him to do. He blinked again then turned around in his seat eyes settling on his son. The little boy continued to kick his legs out seeming to cry louder.

Damn them lungs strong! Jahseh thought as he winced lifting his hand and placing it on the car seat his eyes scanning around for the pacifier. Baby Kentrell instantly quieted down big hazel type eyes settling on his parent. He continued to thrash his arms and legs around now making baby noises. Jahseh spotted the pacifier on his thigh picking it up and sticking it back in the tiny mouth. The baby instantly sucked on it. Jahsheh stared at him blankly his heart clenching tightly when the toddler stared back at him. He looked back forward settling back in his seat with a slouch. He noticed the familiar automatic gates up ahead.

“He reminds me of you when you was that tiny. ”Dwayne chuckled glancing at the rearview mirror at his one and only grandchild. Jahseh didn’t say anything. He just slouched further into his seat looking outside. Dwayne sighed finally making it to the gate. It  instantly opened. He drove forward stopping a bit to greet security then drove all the way to the six-car garage. Jahseh looked around feeling the heaviness in his chest double over. He tried taking deep breathes to ease it. Dwayne killed the engine, opening his door and getting out. He opened the back seat taking baby Kentrell out still in his car seat. “You coming or do you need a minute?” he looked over at his son who wasn’t making any attempt to move. “ Jahseh?”
