As I bring Shai into the hospital, all I can think about is how guilty I feel. I should have just forgiven her. I probably would have done the same thing she did. A young doctor takes her into the ER and then the police come toward me.
"What happened?" One asks. I tell them about pulling that scum bag off of Shai and then knocking him out. I then tell them where I left him and his description. When they leave, I call Shai's mom and a few of her close friends. That say they'll be there as soon as they can. The rage inside me must be evident on my face because many people steer clear. The doctors say I'm not aloud to see her yet, and that alone makes me want to smash in a wall. After an hour, the doctor says I can see her. "Make sure you're positive, it might help her wake up. Okay?" I nod and walk quickly to Shai's room. I try not to cry when I see her. More bruises have formed on her arms and face. Her lip is split and there's still blood in her hair. I walk slowly to the bed and sit down. I take her hand and kiss it.
"Shailers, I'm so sorry. If I hadn't been so proud, maybe this wouldn't have happened. I would have been with you when that creep tried to hurt you. I would have stopped him sooner." A sob escapes my mouth. "I'm so so sorry." A little while later, Shailenes mom arrives. She comes in and gasps. "What happened?" She barely whispers. She comes to the other side of the bed and brushes some of Shai's hair away. "Some creep tried to kill her." I look at Lori and smile. "She'd be really happy your here." She smiles through her tears. "I hope so." I leave so they can have some time alone. But I can't sit down. My heart is thumping. Why can't the doctors just give us some good news? And then guess who I see at the end of the hallway? Ruth.
"Theo! I heard what happened to Shai. I'm so sorry." He sympathetic smile is so fake it reminds me of a Barbie. She try's to give me a hug, but I step back. "Ruth, what are you doing here?" I try not to hiss. She bats her eyelashes and gives me the most innocent smile. "I'm here for you, and Shailene of course." She giggles and then sighs. "Tragic what happened, wasn't it?" She continues. "You need to leave. Now." I cross my arms and tap my foot. "But I just got here!" She whines.
"Yes and now you need to go. I won't say it again." I wanted to strangle her.
"Fine. But I'll be back!" She huffs over her shoulder as she walks away. Her over expensive heels click-clacking down the hallway. I try not to roll my eyes. I see Shai's mom come out of the room, so I walk over to her. "How is she?" I ask.
"She's doing really well. The doctors say she should wake up really soon." My heart jumps. She's going to be okay. I try not to do a happy dance in the hallway.
"Are you going to get some rest?" I ask Lori. She nods and smiles. We hug, awkwardly, and she walks down the hallway and disappears out the doors. I walk into Shai's room and sit down. I pick up her hand and kiss it. "Shai, you have to wake up so we can talk. Then, maybe, we'll finally get together." I feel slight pressure on my hand. My heart flutters. "Shai? Babe? Are you waking up? C'mon, do it again. Squeeze my hand." But she shows no other signs of waking up. I sigh and lean back into my chair.
"Your stubborn even unconscious." I laugh. I hear a slight giggle in the door way. I turn to see Ruth standing there. "Ruth, what did I say? You need to leave." I turn back to Shai. Ruth sighs. "Theo, stop being so conceited. I'm not here for you. Shai and I used to be friends before you and I got together. I'm here for her." I look at her. She has a slight smile. And it's genuine. "Fine. You can stay, for now." I rub my thumb over Shai's hand. Shai, you have to wake up. I miss you.
