"Shai, no!" I scream. Ruth yanks knife from Shai's stomach and grins as she falls to the ground. I crouch down beside her and take her hand, quickly.
"Someone call 911!" I yell. I rock back and forth and kiss Shai's hand repeatedly. "It's okay. It's gonna be okay. Your alright." I whisper. I see Ruth step out he door and I yell for someone to grab her. The manager, with curly brown hair, grabs her arms and the knife. I breath a sigh of relief. At least she won't get away. The ambulance comes and I climb in, along with a few nurses. I'm shaken down to the bone. I had no idea Ruth would go this far. She tried to kill Shailene. I don't know how I could live without her. My mind is racing. Is she going to be okay? Will I ever see her awake again? Will she lose her memory? I try to take deep breaths and calm down. Negative energy, they say, is bad for Shai. We arrive at the hospital and we all pile out. I call Lori and a few of Shai's friends. I dial down my panic for the friends and Lori. No need to rial them up. They rush Shai into the ER and I have to stay out.
"But, Doctor!" I try to say. A couple of nurses hold me back while they set Shai up. I growl at them and they let me go. I tell the lady at the desk to call me as soon as they hear something. I decide to head down to the police station to make a statement. Ruth and a few witnesses are down there as well. It takes every being in my body not to tear her throat out. I don't even look at her. I sit down in the small office and cross my arms.
"So, sir. What happened in your eyes?" The officer with a note pad says to me.
"I was hugging the victim, when Ruth walked up. She plunged the knife into her stomach and tried to run. Shailene crumpled and a barista grabbed Ruth." I try not to let the tears fall. The officer scribbles down a few things and then looks to me.
"Thank you, that's all we need sir." I get up from my chair and stalk out of the room. I avoid Ruth's eyes and drive back to the hospital.
"Mr. James?" A nurse says when I step through the door.
"Yes?" I say.
"We have some bad news." My heart jumps in my throat. I swallow multiple times before answering.
"What's wrong? Is Shailene alright? What happened?" I push past the nurse and and nearly sprint to Shai's room.
"Mr. James. Mr. James! Stop!" She pulls on my shoulder just as I get to the window. She has tubes running in and out of her body. She's so pale she almost blends into the white sheets.
"What's wrong with her?" I croak.
"Well for starters, she hit her head awful hard. She has a concussion. And the knife punctured her kidney. She needs...a kidney transplant." Her words barely reach me.
"I'll do it. She can have mine. Both of them!" Tears are streaming down my face now. "Mr. James. Your kidneys will not work. Parents? A brother or sister, maybe?" I nod.
"Her mom would gladly help." I whisper.
"Theo?" Lori pushes through the doors and jogs to me. I embrace her. We both sob into each others shoulder. I pull back and wipe my eyes.
"She needs...a-a kidney transplant." I blubber.
"I'll go get tested right now." She looks to the nurse.
"Forth floor. Room 202." Lori dashes off and I look at Shai again. I don't know how long I stare at her. Her beautiful face. Her delicate hands. The tears are falling, again. And I don't try to stop them.
----
"Theo. I'm so sorry." Lori says after her test. "I thought I'd be a match."
"No, Lori. This is not your fault. Do you hear me? It's not your fault." I shake her shoulders.
"Hello?" I turn around to see, Shai's dad.
"What are you doing here?" I growl.
He puts his hands up in surrender.
"I've-I've got some help. I'm not drinking. Been clean for nearly a month. I hear that Shai needs a kidney, and since I'm her father-"
"Stop talking and go get tested." I snap.
----
"It's a go!" The doctor tells us.
"When?" I ask, almost excited.
"As soon as the father gets prepped, we will start the surgery." I try not to get my hopes up. Something could go wrong. With my luck something probably will.
"Hey, think positively." Lori rubs my shoulder lightly. I nod. Seconds, minutes, hours later, the doctor comes in. I try to read his face as he talks to the nurse. It gives away nothing.
"We have replaced her kidney....she should be waking up soon." He smiles. Joyful tears spring to my eyes. Lori jumps into my arms. I even give Loni a hug.
"Thank you." I say to him. He nods.
"You can see her now." The doctor says.
We all slowly make our approach to Shai's room. Lori opens the door and we tumble inside. We spread ourselves around the room. Loni, at the window. Lori, on the couch. And I, right next to Shai.
----
The next morning, Lori and I have switched places. I rub the sleep from my eyes when I hear an excited and dreary, "Mommy? I'm so glad you're here. I was so scared." I spring up and run to Shai's side. I grab her hand and kiss it.
"Oh, Shai I'm so glad you're alright. I swear Ruth will be locked up for good now. She'll never hurt us or you again. I'm so sorry I couldn't-" Shai stops my rambling by ripping her hand from my grip.
"I'm sorry. And you are?"
