In which it all comes together. It's Race's perspective!! And yes, maybe I did choose the chapter title from the song from Frozen II. So? I THINK YOU ALL KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!! :) Also, glad for the double update? ;) Anyway. There's a reunion! Enjoy! :)
Race watches David make another tally mark, this one diagonal. Now there are four lines and a slash on the wall. What beautiful art. Not that anyone is gonna find it. Let alone them.
True, that's a lot of cynical thinking. Some may call it pessimism, Race calls it realistic.
David thinks Race is being pessimistic. Not that Race cares.
"What do you think the newsies are doing right now?" Race asks aimlessly. "They're probably all out shoutin' headlines by now. I wonder how many people are movin' about for them to sell to. More people are probably going to be eating rather than wondering 'round."
David's stomach grumbles. "Thanks for making me hungry, Race."
Race sighs. "I miss food."
"You've told me that a bunch."
"Glad they came in last night to give us water, though," Race says with the kind of cheeriness that comes from prison humor. "Didya know that if ya go three days without water, you die?"
David just grunts in return.
"And furthermore," Race continues, "Three minutes without air, you die; and three weeks without food, ya die?"
"I guess even death agrees that three's the charm."
"It's just interesting, I guess."
"You really think the Delanceys are smart enough to know that if they didn't give us water we'd die of thirst?"
Race shrugs. "Maybe." Then he pauses. "Or maybe they just wanted another reason to come beat up on us and call us useless unloved...bad things."
David sighs. "Yeah, they did love using those wonderful words of their's."
Race nods. "Can't expect more from people like them."
"Don't you think this is getting a little old?" David asks.
"Well, yeah," Race answers. "And I say more 'n a little. I can't wait for something new, not just what we've been doing for the past five days. I'm done with dull moments." If he would stop, he would hear a noise they haven't heard before. But, too preoccupied in talking to fill up space, both he and David miss it. "Man, when we get out, I'll make sure I never have another dull moment of my life. Ah, no offense to you, Davey, it's fun talking to you. But you know what I mean? The same room, same people, same clothes, same bonds holding us down, no scenery changes, no changes in the little food and water we've gotten, it's just so little variations! I'm just so tired of nothing so out of the ordinary! I just want one thing, just anything, anything to happen, just something that you don't--"
Before he can say anything more, the door bursts open (a door that for all they could've known would be unlocked--now proven not to be), and standing there are the one and only Jack Kelly and Spot Conlon.
"...see every day," Race finishes numbly and quietly. Then he fully registers what's happening, and a huge smile, the biggest one in five days. "Well grazie al cielo! You guys finally made it!"
"Oh, Race!" Spot rushes over to him immediately and pulls him close, and starts gushing out everything. "I was so worried! And I'm so glad we found you! And I'm so, so sorry we took so long! It must have been horrible in here, I-I can't even begin to imagine, and, and-"
