Chapter 8

The bell rang and Haiko lunged towards Lin trying to grab her by her legs to knock her over. Lin sidestepped and he went rolling, though he was back on his feet quickly. He ran towards her again trying to punch her in the shoulder but she grabbed his arm and flipped him over herself, almost managing to throw him over the edge. He rolled forward managing to grab Lins ankle and knocking her to the ground. He claimed on top of her trying to pin her down but she wrapped her leg around his and flipped it so that way she was on top holding him to the ground by pinning his arm to his back and holding his head down. He growled in frustration but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't manage to free himself and eventually the ref called it, declaring Lin the winner.

"And Lin Beifong wins another medal!" he shouted and the crowd cheered. Haiko stormed off, clearly a sore loser.

Kya and Tenzin came down and congratulated Lin on her win.

"Don't get too cocky now though cause your gonna have to face me," Tenzin smirked.

"And me," Kya added. "You're both going down."

"Oh yeah I guess we'll have to see about that," Lin stated plainly. "I hope you know I'm not taking it easy of either of you." 

"I wouldn't want you to, I like a challenge," Tenzin answered.

"I mean you are dating her," Kya teased, "What more of a challenge do you want."

"Hey!" Lin exclaimed defensively, "I'll have you know I'm an absolute delight."

Tenzin laughed, "Yes you are love," he said giving her a quick kiss on the lips.

Kya felt a twinge of jealously, she tried to tell herself she wasn't jealous that her brother was kissing Lin she was disgusted because her little brother was kissing someone in front of her. She's been trying to convince herself that she does not have a crush on her brother's girlfriend ever since Lin transferred to her class, but she knew she did. She was just hoping that if she ignored it long enough it would go away.

The sparing began and so far Kya, Tenzin, and Lin were unbeatable. It wasn't until the 4th round that some senior earth bender got a lucky shot and knocked Tenzin over the edge. There were only two more rounds left when Kya had the misfortune to fight Haiko.

"Back for another round bitch?" He snarled his top lip curling up.

Kya gulped, she didn't know what it was about him that really got to her but Haiko scared her. Maybe it's the last time he tried to fight her he managed to knock her back into a wall knocking her out for a few minutes and leaving her with a black eye.

"Yeah, but this time your the one going down," she said trying to sound confident but she could hear the unevenness of her voice.

The bell rang and Haiko wasted no time in sending a stream of fire right at her head. She wiped him back with a stream of water and he stumbled but quickly recovered. He jumped up kicking a wall of fire towards Kya who blocked it with a wall of ice that she then sent hurtling towards him. He blasted through sending balls of fire after Kya at a fast pace. She remembered how he had done this last month, backing her up to a wall and then knocking her back. She felt panic rise in her and she tried to fight it away. In this period of time she was distracted with the bad memories he managed to do the same exact thing but this time just knocking her off the platform.

"Haiko wins!" The ref called out, causing the audience to cheer.

Kya could feel her heartbeat racing and her breath felt stuck in her lungs. She stood up shakily and Lin hurried over helping her up.

"You alright?" Lin asked, concern filling her voice. "It looked like you froze up there, and now you seem to be in panic mode."

"I-I'm fine," Kya stammered though the memories of the first time she fought Haiko were filling her head.  

Lin furrowed her eyebrows, "He's the one that had given you that black eye isn't he?" She asked in a low dangerous voice.

Kya nodded, not having the energy to lie to her. She immediately regretted it when she remembered that Lin and Haiko were now the two finalists again.

Lin's face was etched with anger. "As much as I wish you had won so I could beat you, I'm really really glad you didn't," she growled through gritted teeth as she turned to glare at Haiko. Kya was half expecting him to drop dead just from the death glare Lin was giving him.

I'd hate to be on the other end of that. Kya thought.

Lin walked up on the platform with a murderous look in her eyes as she got in position for the fight. The bell rang and right off the bat Lin sent a disk flying as hard as she could at his head, he ducked narrowly missing. It wasn't like Lin to make the first move, she normally waited for the right time to attack but right now she was too angry to wait. She wanted to crush the dickwad under a pile of rocks.

He sent a jet of fire towards Lin who pulled up a wall of earth and sent it flying at Haiko who dove to the side to avoid the collision. Lin sent rock after rock flying at Haiko most of them hitting him despite his best efforts. Each blow sends him falling back a step and grimacing in pain but he was determined to win. Lin landed a hard blow right to Haikos head throwing him back over the edge and knocking him out cold.

The crowd cheered and the ref came raising Lins hands in the air in her victory announcing her to be the winner of yet another challenge. Medics went rushing to Haikos's side since he was getting up. It took them a couple of minutes to get him to wake up, but in the meantime, the judges were placing another medal around Lin's neck.

"That was amazing Lin!" Tenzin exclaimed as he picked up his girlfriend twirling her around in excitement. "You looked terrifying but I think that was the best fight you did the whole day!"

Lin grunted in response causing Tenzin to furrow his eyebrows. "You okay? I thought you'd be gloating at the fact you won 4 out of your 5 challenges."

"That guy Haikos the one who gave Kya that black eye a few weeks ago," Lin informed him, a dark look still on her face.

Tenzin's jaw dropped, "Really?" Lin nodded in confirmation.

"That's why she froze when she was fighting him," Lin explained.

"I was wondering what had happened up there."

"That's my daughter! The best earth bender around!" Toph exclaimed excitingly as she came over to the young couple. "Well besides me of course, I did teach you everything you know."

Lin smiled proudly to her mom, "Thanks, mom."

"Good job Lin! You did great out there, you got a lot of spirit," Aang praised Lin patting her on the back. "You think that kid will be alright though?" 

"Probably, just took a rock or two to the head," Katara chuckled, hugging lin. 

Kya finally came over as well patting Lin on the back, "It really was great Lin."

"Thanks," Lin smiled at Kya. "How are you?" She asked in a hushed tone so no one else would hear.

"I'm okay, just got a little shook up that's all," Kya smiled down at the younger girl. "Thanks for asking though," she said wrapping Lin in a hug, catching her off guard considering Lin's not a big hugger and tends to just push people away when they try. Lin could feel herself blush at the water bender's touch and hoped everyone just thought it was from the fight just minutes ago. She didn't understand why the water bender had such an effect on her, but there was no denying it. She just didn't know what it meant.
