Kya hadn't seen Lin at school so far, in fact no one had. There were rumors flying around before the end of the day about what happened but Kya doubted any of them were true. She figured she was just sick or something and people were just making things up.
After school Kya decided to just stop by Lin's and see if she's home. She hoped that if she wasn't her little sister might be or even her mother Toph though that was unlikely.
She walked to Lin's house and knocked on the door waiting for a response that never came. She looked around and saw the ground looked all messed up and there was scorch marks on the side of the house in a few places. She went around to the side and saw someone had spray painted the word 'faggot' on the side in big red letters. Her mind automatically wandered to the group of people Lin had felt following them friday and wondered if it had anything to do with that. She was worried something had happened to her. After sitting on the Beifongs front porch for nearly 30 minutes she decided to go down to the police station and see if Toph was there.
Kya walked up to the front desk and asked, "Is Chief Beifong here?"
"Yes she is up in her office," the lady answered with a kind smile.
Kya took the elevator up to the top floor which held the desks for all the detectives and Tophs office. She walked over to the door of the office ignoring the looks of the officers around her.
"Come in," Tophs voice answered and Kya pushed open the door.
Immediately she saw Lin sitting at the desk with an even deeper frown than she normally had, a black eye and her arm in a sling. Her little sister was sitting on the floor throwing a ball at the wall.
"What are you doing here?" Lin asked with a look of surprise when she saw Kya.
"I was looking for you!" Kya said with a breath of relief. Her mind had been going to all of the extreme possibilities. "You weren't at school and I hadn't seen you since Saturday morning!"
Lin smirked at Kya, "Awe was someone worried about me," she teased.
"Yes I was," Kya said with a blush. "But what happened to you?"
"Last night our good friend Haiko and some guys came and started trying to bust up my house in the middle of the night so Mom and I went out and they put up a fight. Didn't last long but one of them got a couple lucky shots at me."
"They weren't lucky shots," Toph scoffed, "Your stance was off cause you were putting all your energy into that one fire bender."
Lin rolled her eyes, "Whatever."
"So that's why you weren't at school?" Kya said sitting down in the chair next to Lin.
"I've been helping mom with the paper work for it, she said it'd be faster for me to just do it instead of her having to have an officer to do it."
"I didn't want her or her sister going to school either incase someone wanted to attack her there too," Toph added. "I don't think their goal was to vandalise our house, I think they wanted Lin to come out since they didn't even hesitate to attack her."
"How many people were there?" Kya asked.
"About 5 guys and a couple girls," Lin answered. "Only like 3 of them went to our school though."
"I saw what they paint-" Kya started but Lin shot her a death glare that said "shut the fuck up" perfectly.
"Yeah I don't know what the point of just spraying shit on my house was but it'll be easy enough to cover," Lin said glaring at Kya to go along with it.
"Oh yeah, easy," Kya said uneasily.
"Why are you so uncomfortable?" Toph asked Kya narrowing her eyes.
"I'm not!" Kya lied.
"I can tell your lying," Toph stated. "I already know my daughters not being entirely truthful but I know I'll never get anything out of her so your gonna spill."
"I've already said i'm not lying," Lin stated plainly.
Toph chuckled. "Your a good liar but not that good. Now Kya spill it."
Kya looked at Lin with wide eyes and Lin sighed knowing full well Kya couldn't lie to her mom. Lin knew her mom was gonna find out about her and Kya sooner or later but this wasn't the exactly ideal way.
"It said faggot," Lin finally snapped clenching her jaw.
Toph furrowed her eyebrows. "Why didn't you want me to know that so bad?" she asked in a surprisingly softer voice.
"I don't know," Lin mumbled.
"You think I don't know about you and Kya or something?" Toph said smirking.
Both Lin and Kyas attention snapped back to Toph. "What, how!" Lin exclaimed.
"I'm not an idiot," Toph scoffed, "You really think I was gonna care? I'd rather her than twinkle toes junior."
Kya tried to conceal her smile and Lin looked like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
"I didn't think you'd care but I was still scared to tell you," Lin admitted. Toph grabbed a pen off the table and threw it at Lin. "Ow! What was that for!"
"Your my daughter your not allowed to be scared at something so trivial."
Lin smiled. "Sorry Chief," she said jokingly.
A filing cabinet suddenly fell off over causing Kya to jump out of her skin and Lin only to flinch and turn around quickly.
"Look mommy!" Su said jumping up and down. "I knocked it over!"
Tophs face lit up. "I knew you'd catch on to metal bending soon!" she said jumping up and scooping her daughter up triumphantly.
Lin jumped up as well and gave her sister a high five. "Nice Su, won't be too long before me and you can take on mom," she said playfully.
"Oh you wish," Toph smiled.
Although Kya never had really understood their family dynamics, they really were a great family.
