I came home late from my run the previous night, and even after getting into my bed, sleep eluded me almost until sunrise. I was thinking about everything my father had said, and I wondered how much more of it was there that I didn't know. If I hadn't overheard him on the phone, he wouldn't have told me anything. I was angry with him for not telling me earlier.
He tried to talk to me after I got home, but I was too upset to listen. Basically, he thought I was still a child, and I shouldn't be preoccupied with the so-called adult stuff. But I was already sixteen, and I could make some decisions for myself. I will take over the title in two years, and I should start learning about taking charge. All my father was doing to train me was learning everything about packs, such as their history and alliances. I wasn't sure how he planned to pass down his title to me if he continued this way. I guess I will have to learn by myself. I was confident I was ready for this.
When I met Adam that morning, I must have looked pretty groggy because he held my face and brushed his thumbs under my eyes. "Someone couldn't sleep last night?" I smiled at him because he was just so sweet. "I was thinking about everything going on lately," I told him. It was only half a lie. I was going to tell him what my dad did, but I just wasn't ready for it yet. I knew he would get upset, and I didn't want that to happen the first thing in the morning.
"I hope you were thinking about me?" he said, smiling at me. "I think about you all the time," I said, chuckling. That was actually true, too, and I didn't even try to deny it.At school, everything was calm. Members of both packs seemed to relax down after our announcement the day before. They were not exactly best friends, but at least the tension was gone. I was wondering if that was real or was it only the calm before the storm. I guess it all depended on what happens tomorrow.
When Adam went to get my lunch, Lee came to our desk and sat down next to me. I knew he wasn't fond of me from the start, but I didn't have any hard feelings for him. He only did what he thought he had to do at the time, and I knew he was loyal to Adam all the way.
"Hey," he said as he slumped down on a chair next to me. "Hey, what's up?" I said and slightly raised my eyebrows. "Humm, I just wanted to say, you know..." he said, looking away from me. "What? No, I don't know," I said, smiling inwardly as he looked so funny when he was embarrassed. "I'm sorry for being such a jerk. I see you and Adam are kind of serious now, so... I just want us to be cool," he now looked at me sideways from the corner of his eyes. I really had to smile at that now. The big tough guy saying he was sorry. That was something you didn't see every day.
"Yeah, sure, we're cool," I said, trying to sound casual because I knew that was kind of guys' thing to do. When Adam came, he was looking curiously between Lee and me. "No way, are you two talking?" he said a bit over excitedly. Lee scooted over to give Adam his seat beside me. "Yeah, we are cool," was all he said. I grinned at that but didn't say anything further.
While eating, I was distracted thinking about how to tell Adam about yesterday. I wanted him to know before the meeting tomorrow, so he would be prepared for anything. I thought this was my only chance because we couldn't see each other after school. I ate quickly, just as the day before, and asked Adam to talk to me privately. He started grinning because he thought I had the same intentions as the previous day.
He hurried after me down the hallway, and as we entered a classroom, he hugged me from behind and pressed his tall and muscular body against me. I couldn't say that it didn't feel extremely good. He wrapped one arm around my stomach, and with the other, he moved my hair back from one side of my face and tucked it behind my ear. He then started trailing small kisses from under my ear and down my neck all the way down to the place where his claim was just above my collar bone. I was getting lost in his embrace, and I moved my head to the other side instinctively to give him better access. He smiled against my neck, put his hands on my stomach, and pulled me even closer against his body. I let out a deep breath as he did that.
