As the cursor blinked at item number 28, Alex wondered if she should scrap the whole list altogether. After all, making lists and plans was something she always did AND the whole point of this whole exercise was to try and not do things she normally did.
"Babe, add tinder to the list." Stella, Alex's best friend said through FaceTime.
"What do you mean add Tinder to the list?" Alex asked, still fixated on number 28.
"I mean you're a serial monogamist, right?" Stella started.
"Uhh... no? I mean I'd been in one relationship. I don't think that counts as seria--" Alex started protesting before her best friend had interrupted her.
"So you're an uptight monogamist right?" Stella raised an eyebrow before pausing pointedly as if waiting for Alex to start protesting again. Except Alex just shook her head and laughed so Stella continued, "So if you wanted to do something different, you should do someone different."
"Really?" Alex continued to laugh, "Your first input onto this list—after being completely disinterested all this time—is Tinder? I'm going through a quarter-life crisis that seems like it will stick around straight into a midlife crisis, and all you've got is Tinder?"
Stella laughs with her best friend, "I mean snowboarding? Hiking? We both know I'm useless when it comes to that stuff. But dating--"
"You mean dating assholes?" Alex cuts Stella off with a raised eyebrow of her own. Now this is how Alex knows that Stella and her, despite all their differences, are real best friends. They can say anything without thinking; they can poke fun of each other without ever having to worry about offending the other.
There were a lot of things Alex wished were different about her life. But not this friendship.
"Not dating assholes," Stella retorted, "just going on a date with a few assholes to get that one asshole out of your system."
"Enough about assholes." Alex took a deep breath, "I miss you."
"One more semester before grad, if all goes well." Stella smiled
"Then you move here and we can be together forever, right?"

A/N: Interested to see what everyone thinks of this so far. I know it's a short prologue and we haven't even met the other protagonist yet. But it's coming soon! I promise.
