chapter
— 17 —Jake and Sunghoon were in their own world while their five friends talked amongst themselves. It was already after school and they all were walking down to begin their walks home, but the two were far ahead of them, not paying any attention to those behind them. "So are you guys coming over today?" Heeseung asked loud enough for the two to hear.
"Yeah, I'm leaving a little early though," Sunoo stated, playing with the water bottle in his hands. "What about you guys?" Jay yelled. Everyone began to notice how much more Sunghoon and Jake would hang out and leave them behind. They seemed so close, despite only meeting a week or so ago. It was nice to see Sunghoon so happy though, they could all agree on that. "Hello?!" Ni-ki yelled again, cupping his hand around his mouth to see if they could hear him now. But still, they didn't respond and continued to walk down at a faster pace.
Just when they reached the turn for Heeseung's house, the duo turned the opposite way before finally turning back to them. "Bye, see you guys tomorrow!" Jake exclaimed, waving frantically. Sunghoon waved as well before looking down at Jake. "See you!" They didn't even take another glance back at them, walking down the sidewalk towards their own houses. "I'm—I don't even know what to say at this point," Jungwon shook his head with a small laugh. Everyone joined in, following behind Heeseung to his house.

"Hyung? Mom?" Jake called out into the dark house. He wasn't even hopeful, he knew the two weren't home. With Jaehyuk in university and their mother still hard at work despite saying she'd stay home once they moved back to Korea, the house was always empty when he came home. "Layla!" He called out, kneeling to take off his shoes. Sunghoon followed behind him and took his own shoes off, shrugging off his blazer to hang it beside Jake's.
"Where is your family?" Sunghoon questioned, allowing Jake to drag him into the living room. "My brother is at school and my mom is most likely working. Usually, I'm the only one home for a while after school," The younger claimed and climbed into the couch after putting his backpack on the floor. He loosened his tie a little as he reached down to grab the TV remote, glancing at Sunghoon who was still standing up. "Come here," He patted the space beside him.
"Layla! Where are you?" Jake called again, looking around. Sunghoon took a seat beside the older, putting his backpack beside Jake's. Today Jake had promised that they could hang out at his house, didn't think they would be alone though. The older's house was nicely furnished and looked very comforting compared to the bare outside. The walls were painted white and the floor was a darker wood that he felt cold against his feet, even though his socks. He sighed out when he leaned into the couch, looking at Jake who had stood up to look for Layla.
"Layla!" He exclaimed, opening his arms for the tan dog that was running towards him with her tongue out. "Come here, come to say hi to Hoon" He spoke in English so Sunghoon couldn't understand, deciding to stay safe and wave at the dog instead of trying to guess what he was trying to say. He couldn't help but notice that Jake's voice changed whenever he spoke in English in comparison to when he spoke in Korean, Sunghoon found it really cool if anything.
"Hi Layla," Sunghoon greeted the dog that jumped up onto the couch to lick his face, her body falling onto his. Her weight caught him off guard as they fell back onto the couch, Sunghoon and Jake laughing in unison. She was a big dog in contrast to his own so he laughed when he couldn't push himself back up to sit straight. "It's nice to meet you to Layla," She was still licking his face, barking once or twice in response.
"She likes you, I'm glad. She doesn't really like other people besides my family." Jake pat his leg. "Layla down, come over here. I don't think Sunghoon can breathe with you on him like that," This made Sunghoon laugh harder, sitting upright when Layla rushed to lay beside Jake. "Let's start homework. Yesterday we spent more time eating than working on homework and our history project," Jake stated with a laugh, scooting Layla over so that she wasn't in between them anymore.
Sunghoon tugged on his backpack zipper until it opened to grab a hold of his pen and folder, searching for their first assignment. "I was looking at our math assignment and almost cried. Please help me," Sunghoon pleaded, sulking as he pointed down at all of the problems on the paper. Jake looked over the paper as well, he laughed and leaned against the couch with his hand on his arm. "Yes yes, I'll help you out."

The two laid on top of Jake's bed, staring up at the ceiling. The younger brought his hand to grab another chip from the bag, stuffing it into his mouth with a crunch. The silence that came upon them a few minutes ago was comforting and it seemed they needed it. After all, they had just spent the past few hours finishing their homework and project. Once they both finished, they headed to the older's bedroom to relax and hang out. But they were much too exhausted from school and the assignments to even begin. Nobody minded though, it was comforting to just lay and think about whatever came to mind once in a while. Plus, it was relaxing to just be in each other's presence. At least, that's what Sunghoon thought.
Sunghoon spotted a certain color in the corner of his eyes, his head whipping to look at it clearly. Bright blue and circular as it was, he recognized it clearly. It looked like the ball he and Jaeyun played with when they first met and became friends, Sunghoon froze to stare at it for a few seconds. So many thoughts flooded his mind, wondering if he was just imagining things. Or if he completely forgot and thought the ball was blue just to make him overthink. But he shook his head and stared back at the ceiling, patting Jake's hand with his left hand.
"Hm?" He hummed, turning to look at Sunghoon. The younger turned to him as well, staring into his eyes. "It's been really nice getting to know you, Jake," He suddenly confessed with a shy smile. This caught Jake off guard but he smiled back, scooting just a little more close to Sunghoon. "Same here," The older whispered. They stared into each other's eyes for a while, admiring each other with the smallest smile. It was making both of their hearts pound. Well until a certain tan dog named Layla decided to jump onto the both of them.
"Layla!" They both yelled at the same time.
