In a secure room at the Mindanao Western Command headquarters, a group of individuals had gathered. The room was completely sealed off from the outside and guarded by security and Presidential Security Group personnel to ensure that no information or noise could leak out.
As the sun set and shone through the window, the faces of the people present were illuminated, including their leader. The head of the PhilSecta furrowed her brow while the acting AFP Commander-in-Chief repeatedly clenched his fists with a worried expression. The young secretary of the Department of National Defense sat on a sofa, her beautiful face appearing impassive, although those who knew her well could see that she looked stern and focused as she typed rapidly on her floating pad, while the AFP Tripartite Generals on the back watched on their platforms.
After a female sergeant left the room, having presented her report on a current issue near one of the military camps, the previous calm in the room dissipated. The head of the PhilSecta, Anna Montes, was the first to speak.
"Why do you always have to put yourself in danger, Ms. President?" she asked, voicing the thoughts of everyone present.
Three pairs of eyes turned to their leader, who was standing in front of the window, but she shook her head. "I have to keep doing it," she replied, and the room fell silent once more.
The first to give in was Jose Raulio Batangbata, the acting AFP Commander-in-Chief.
"When the Ms. President sets her mind on something, there's no stopping her. There's no point in arguing," he said, sighing. The DND Chief glared at him, as if trying to bore a hole through him, before speaking.
"I can't accept that," she said.
As the youngest of the three, Lily Sagrada couldn't understand why her superior would willingly put herself in danger. However, it was not the president who responded to her.
"If this is what the Ms. President wants, then our opinions don't matter," said the butler, his annoyed expression unchanged. Having served the president the longest of them all, he knew full well how stubborn she was and how impossible it was to change her mind.
"You always have something to say to the President at every opportunity, but you won't stop her when it counts?" Anna asked mockingly, causing the butler's eyebrows to twitch. His dark eyes glared at her coldly.
"I have no objection to the matter since I'm under your branch, Grandmaster," the butler, whose true name was Homer, said to the head of the PhilSecta, Anna Montes.
"Stubborn kid. Watch your mouth, or I'll burn you to a crisp," Anna snapped back, almost bursting a blood vessel as she glared at Homer.
The acting AFP Commander-in-Chief, Jose Raulio, who was standing between them, sighed in frustration. "Will you two stop bickering over my head? Honestly."
"The last time I tried to stop them from fighting, it didn't end well for me. Since then, I've tried to make sure they at least don't cause any more trouble for me, but otherwise I leave them be in the President's guidance," he thought tiredly.
Homer shifted his gaze from Anna to the president. "Still, even if you were to decide to confront that, it would be better if I—," he began, but was cut off by the president.
"No," she said sternly. "You can't do that. Then everything we've worked towards in the vicinities would be for nothing."
