I went back into Alex's room where he was still sleeping. Sitting next to him, I fit my hand in his. Laying on his side, his shirt was lifted about halfway up his body, exposing his tummy. His hair was messy, covering his face. I found myself smiling just thinking...I kind of felt embarrassed thinking how cute he looked. Of course, I would never tell him that, but...
Alex started to groan, and he gripped my hand firmly. He slowly opened his eyes, looking up and over at me. "Hey." Sitting up, he spoke with a gruff voice.
"Hey to you too." I replied. Suddenly, my smile began to fade, and I looked away. Just thinking about Caden's message for him, everything else began to devour that simple thought.
Scooting over, he maneuvered himself to my side and wrapped his arm around my waist. "Are you still upset?"
Shaking my head, I answered. "No, I mean I am, just not like I was before. I..." I let out a small laugh. My head was just a jumbled mess right now. "I'm clearly not thinking straight right now."
"It's not really surprising considering what just happened."
"That's true." Pausing for a moment, I figured now would be the time to tell him. "By the way, Caden wanted me to give you a message."
Alex raised an eyebrow. "A message?"
Nodding, I replied. "Yea. He said thank you, for being by my side."
His eyes widened a bit, a little shocked. Narrowing them again, he looked away. "I shouldn't be thanked. As many times as I've said I'd be by your side, that I would always be here, I ended up leaving you alone all because of my own selfish needs."
"Alex-"
"It's true. I'm always running out on you even with everything going on. I don't deserve any thanks."
I took a hold of his hand. It wasn't until then that I realized how tense his body became. "Alex, stop." Turning his head towards me, our eyes locked on each other. "I don't want to hear it."
Squeezing my hand in return, he shook his head. "I'm sorry, I...it just pisses me off. I piss myself off." Releasing my hand, he ran both of his hands down his face as if he was wiping off his shame. I couldn't help but look away, I just didn't want to see him like this.
Taking a deep breath, I didn't even want to think about it, but I had to ask. "So...what are we going to do about Zeke?"
"I honestly don't know." Alex replied standing to his feet. "I don't even know what the hell he's capable of besides being able to change his appearance and hide his presence. It's possible he's even listening in on us now just laughing to himself." That's true. Zeke has the advantage over us. How are we suppose to go against someone we know nothing about?
