For a moment, I was mesmerized by how pretty the girl was. Even though she was clearly in pain and I was the reason behind it, I just stood starstruck. That was until Sooyoung nudged me and said:
"Are you just going to stand there like an idiot or actually apologize for hurting her?"
Oh shit, she's right.
"I'm so sorry, I did not intend for the ball to ricochet and certainly did not expect anyone to come into the hall"- I spoke louder than my usual speaking tone.
The girl was still lying on the ground, seemingly not wanting to get up. However, as I spoke to her, she gave us a weak smile and replied:
"It's alright. I wasn't supposed to be here anyway, I just opened the wrong door and, well, certainly got punished for doing so"- as she said this she sat up a little too quickly- "ow!"- she scowled and put her hand on her forehead. The ball hit her pretty hard, so it was no wonder that she was in pain. She might have even had a concussion.
"You have to see the doctor, young lady. The ball was coming at a very high speed and could have done some significant damage"- said the coach, who was obviously right. Something was telling me that I had to speak up in this case as well, so I said something that made Sooyoung look at me with a surprised face:
"If it hadn't been for me and my horrible aim, none of this would've happened. Please allow me to take you to the doctor's myself. The rest of the team can go back to practice without me".
The small girl looked at me for a moment and then nodded in agreement.
"Fine, if she's alright with it then i'm letting you go, miss Son, but be sure to attend practice next week".
"Yes ma'am"- I replied to the coach. Then Hyunjin and Sooyoung went up to the girl who fell victim to my missed shot and helped her stand up. After that they put her hand over my shoulder. I held her waist to prevent her from falling, as she was significantly shorter than me. This sounds extremely weird to say out loud, but having her so close to me somehow felt... good. I have a feeling that Sooyoung was getting some odd vibes from all of this too, as I caught her staring at me in a confused and unusual way a couple of times.
I walked out of the basketball court with the mystery girl and took her to the doctor's office. Luckily, after thoroughly checking her they said that she did not seem to have a concussion, but still recommended her to keep away from attending classes for a day or two. They then gave her an ice pack and also some medicine to slightly relieve her headache. After this they let us go and asked me to take her outside for some fresh air. We walked for a few minutes, her already clearly feeling better and then sat down on a bench. This was the first time we had ever seen each other so we were obviously awkward and extremely quiet. At last, she decided to ask a question:
"So, which year are you in?"
I didn't expect her to speak up, so I flinched a little before answering: "Oh- i'm in my first year. What about you?"
"Same goes for me. First year and already managed to get a spot in the basketball team? You must be talented".
"It's not much, really, I just got lucky"- I didn't expect her to compliment me either and it made me kind of shy. Hopefully she didn't notice.
We then went on to talk about our majors, where we planned to work when we got done with education, what our hobbies were, and so on. As I was talking to her I realized that none of us even needed to try- everything just went on so naturally. It was almost like we were meant to have met.
"I know I said this before but I want to apologize for hitting you with that ball again. It was an accident and I don't know how to make up for it"- I said to her and could clearly hear the concern in my voice. Honestly, I didn't sound like myself at all.
"It's alright, really, you don't have to worry about it. Honestly it's my fault, I was searching for a completely different place and accidentally ended up here. I kind of brought it upon me". After saying this she chuckled and that made me smile too. All of a sudden she turned her head towards me and I realized that we hadn't made direct eye contact before. Her eyes were beautiful. It was almost like I could drown in them if I didn't look away fast enough.
"Thank you for being nice enough to take me to the doctor's and skip practice. I really appreciate it"- she said to me, flashing a million dollar smile. God. She's so beautiful.
"It's nothing. I owed it to you. Practice can always wait".
"Well, as much I enjoy talking to you, I should probably get going. I promised to meet up with my friends and I was supposed to be there fifteen minutes ago. I think they'll have begun to worry already, so i'll get going"- she said, standing up. I didn't want her to leave and it kind of broke my heart, but It's not like I had any right to stop her.
"Alright then. Bye".
"Bye".
As she said this she turned around and left. I watched her as she was walking down the college garden when, all of a sudden, a realization hit me:
"HEY! WAIT UP!"- I yelled out in hopes that she would hear me, which actually worked and made her turn around. I ran up to her and, while I barely managed to catch my breath, I asked:
"I don't think I asked for your name".
"Oh~ We spoke about so many things, but forgot about basic introductions. Well, my name is Chaewon. Park Chaewon" she said with a soft smile on her face, expecting me to introduce myself as well.
"I'm Son Hyejoo".
"Well, Son Hyejoo, it was nice meeting you. I suppose we will see each other again?"- she asked in a somewhat playful tone.
"Oh, of course we will. It's not that simple to escape me"- I said, having decided to play along.
"Alright then. See you next time"- she said and turned around, this time actually leaving to meet with her friends.
Something about this girl was so incredibly magnetic. I had spoken to her only once, but I felt like I wanted to see her over and over again.
Park Chaewon. What an interesting person you are.
***I was walking back to the dorm, when I heard someone calling my name. I turned around to see Sooyoung with her girlfriend, Jiwoo, and a girl called Jungeun, who was Jiwoo's childhood friend and also pretty close to me and Sooyoung as well. I went up to them.
"Hyejoo!!! I've missed you~"- said Jiwoo, pulling me into a hug. She has to be the most affectionate person i've ever met. The hug went on for a bit, until it was broken up by Sooyoung:
"Jiwoo, babe, i'm glad you like my friends but you're making me jealous when you hug other people like that"- as she said this, Jiwoo let me go and immediately went to Sooyoung, who leaned in and gave her a quick kiss on the lips- "besides, I think miss Hyejoo here has already managed to get herself a girl".
"Woah woah, hold up, what did I just hear?"- said Jungeun. She always tried to tone it down but we all knew that she enjoyed gossiping.
"Sooyoung, what the fuck are you talking about?"- I was pretty confused and not following her. Hearing my reaction, Sooyoung smirked, and then proceeded to explain:
"Our Hyejoo managed to hit a very pretty and sweet girl with a basketball ball today. Not only did I catch her giving her some sweet looks, she also offered to take her to the doctor's as an apology for hurting her. You don't need a PhD in psychology to realize that you don't normally behave like that, Hyejoo".
"Sooyoungie is right, Hye, that sounds absolutely nothing like you interacting with strangers"- Jiwoo replied, agreeing with her girlfriend (of fucking course).
"Could it possibly be that our little Hyejoo has... a crush?"- Jungeun said with an oddly excited expression.
"Jeez, you guys need to relax. I literally just offered help to someone who I accidentally injured and you're already throwing us a wedding. It was nothing, I was just being a decent human being".
"Yeah yeah, and you totally didn't catch feelings for the girl. Not even a little bit"- said Jungeun, clearly doubting her own words.
"You know, Jungeun, you've got some nerve speaking about someone else's love life when your own is the biggest mess our planet has ever seen"- said Sooyoung, teasing Jungeun. Hearing this clearly didn't make her happy, as she scoffed loudly and crossed her arms. I decided to add a little more spice.
"Sooyoung is right, though. I mean, does anyone know what the fuck is going on between you and Jinsol? I swear to god, whatever the two of you have is more confusing than the Minecraft enchanting table"- having heard this comparison she became even more pissed, so she finally went off at us:
"Both of you shut the fuck up!!! What do you know about my love life?! Or my relationship with Jinsol? Actually, there is no relationship with her. NOTHING is happening between us and it would be better if none of you brought it up ever again!".
"Well, Jungie, I love you and don't want you to get mad again but I don't think that whatever's going on between you and Jinsol is... nothing"- Jiwoo entered the conversation and, to Jungeun's dismay, took our side.
"Ugh, you too Jiwoo?!"
"I mean you can't really blame me or Hyejoo or Sooyoung! You can't just sleep with someone and then say that nothing is going on between the two of you! It might be extremely complicated but it is something. And, judging by the way the two of you look at each other and constantly flirt, I can safely say that you have feelings for each other but are both scared of admitting it".
Jiwoo doesn't say a lot of smart things, but when she does, she's always right. This time was no different either. I could see that Jungeun realized that too, but since she hated admitting to being wrong, she decided to just ignore whatever she said and get up and walk away. As she was walking, she said to us:
"I refuse to listen to your delusional ideas when I have three assignments to finish and one to start. Have a nice day, losers".
We watched as she walked away and, when there was enough distance for her to not be able to hear us, Sooyoung said to me and Jiwoo:
"I'm willing to bet everything I have in my life on the fact that Jungeun will soon realize that she's in love with Jinsol".
"You don't need a bet for that, Sooyoung, I think it's already clear enough. The question is what she's going to do when that happens"- I replied.
"Well, knowing Jungie, i'm sure she will panic a lot at first. But I have a feeling that once she calms down she'll start looking for advice and, eventually, confess to Jinsol. But you can't really say for certain yet, can you?"- said Jiwoo, to which both I and Sooyoung agreed.
I didn't want to be the third wheel, so I decided to go back to the dorm too. As I was walking, the only thing I could think about was the girl I met today and, more importantly, the impression my behavior left on Sooyoung an everyone else. Did it really look like I caught feelings for Chaewon? No, that's impossible. Love is not my thing. Never has been, never will be.
But I would be a liar if I said that the little blonde girl did not stay in my head for the entirety of the day, even when I went to bed.
Park Chaewon, what are you doing to me?
