The party was more or less enjoyable. Considering what kind of person I am, I was surprised to be having even a remote amount of fun. If I don't feel like dying of boredom at a party, then it means that it's really good. Chaewon, on the other hand, seemed like she was having the time of her life. She didn't drink too much (I didn't let her), but she was still full of energy and willing to dance with every single friend she has. Unfortunately for her, most of her friends were taken people and, therefore, were spending time with their significant others, so she was stuck with someone as unenthusiastic as me.
"Hyejoo! You're at a p a r t y, parties are made to drink, dance, sing and have fun, not just sit there like an emo kid from the early 2000s".
"Ouch, Chaewon, that was a little harsh, don't you think?"- I asked as I looked up at her.
"Might have been, but you know me well enough to know that I don't really care, don't you?"
"Well, you're right about that".
"Then don't be surprised".
"Surprised about wha-" I couldn't finish my sentence, as she grabbed me and dragged me to the area where people were dancing. I tried to go back to the place where I was sitting before, but Chaewon's grip turned out to be stronger than I thought it was. Honestly, I didn't expect this much strength from such a small figure.
"Hyejoo, please, just one dance"- she said to me. I looked at her and saw an expression that I didn't expect at all: it wasn't playful, she was actually asking me for a dance with a serious face. I'm pretty sure that I've never seen Chaewon speak to me with such a serious expression before. To be honest, it's kind of intimidating when she looks like this.
"Fine. But, let's wait for the next song. This one is ending soon".
"Alright"- she said and smiled, making her serious demeanor disappear.
We waited for probably less than a minute and the song finally came to an end. At this point, I was almost praying for the next song to not be something embarrassing, because I don't have much experience with dancing at parties. All of a sudden, we heard Heejin's voice yelling:
"ALRIGHT, IT'S SLOW DANCE TIME BITCHES, BUCKLE UPPPPP!"
And then proceeded to turn on... Singularity by BTS.
Jeon Heejin, I hate you so much for this. You're literally forcing me into a slow dance with my crush.
"Well, this song is certainly not a happy one, but it's good slow-dance material, don't you think?"- asked Chaewon.
"Well yeah... I guess it is..."
"I suppose you don't have any experience with slow dancing at parties. Let me teach your dumb ass"- as she said this she took my hands and put them on her waist (oh god help me I'm dying over here) and put her hands on my shoulders- "There's nothing too difficult, really, just sway to the beat and try not to step on my foot". I didn't really feel too reassured but there was no way out, so I did what I was told.
Halfway into the song, everything stopped being too awkward. The only thing I couldn't do was hold eye contact. That would be too much. And she seemed to have followed up on that:
"I never saw you as someone too shy to look their dance partner in the eyes, Hyejoo"- as she said this, I was forced to look down. And our eyes met.
"There are some things that you just don't see, Chaewon".
"Maybe you're right about that, Hye, but right now, all I want to see is you".
I felt my face heating up and sincerely hoped that she couldn't see me blush in the dark. At this point, I was more confused than I have ever been in my life. So confused that I didn't even notice her getting closer to me and putting her head on my shoulder. It was basically a hug. And then I realized that this was our first time being this close to one another. We had been friends for months, but something this intimate hadn't happened before. But here we were. Slow-dancing to "Singularity". It was illuminating, freeing, hands down one of the best feelings I've ever encountered in my life. Everything I had been longing for during the past few months was happening right now and I felt like it was a dream.
