My legs start going numb and my vision is blurred. I take a deep breath then plunge back under the water. My arms cut through the water smoothly. I stretch my arms out and I feel my fingers brush against the ledge. I hear the buzzer go off and I pull up to the surface. I take in a big breath and look around. I realize that not only am I first, I'm the only one that's finished the race. I use my hand to comb my wet hair back out of my face. The next competitor comes up beside me. Dru Brown. Dru Brown isn't the nicest girl at school. Not at all. For some reason she absolutely hates me.
"Good job, Dru." I say, still out of breath. Dru scowls at me.
"Don't throw me off, Lee."
"The race's done." I think but I don't say anything. The last buzzer goes off as the last swimmer pulls up. Jamie Ryanson. Jamie is Dru's best friend.
I pull myself out of the water and onto the deck. I grab my team towel that says my team name 'The Electric Eels'. The name isn't very interesting but the symbol, which is an eel in the shape of a circle with a bolt of lightning through it, is pretty cool. Dru and Jamie are on the 'sea lion super squad'. I think the name sounds kind of funny, like the name of a superhero team or something. I slip on my Eels flip flops and I pull off my goggles. I place my goggles in my bag and put my bag over my shoulder. I walk to the change room to get ready for the awards ceremony, but Dru stops me.
"Good job, Jordan." She says, much to my surprise. Then I remember that the whole event is being filmed and televised. Plus, agents are always watching and they need to know you're not only a great swimmer, but a great person.
"Thanks Dru." I say trying to sound as nice as possible.

At the awards ceremony I was called up first and I walk to the front of the room. I get a gold medal and a trophy that says '1st place age 14-18 category' and a few glares from Dru. Then Dru is called up and puts a nice, sweet smile on her face. She accepts her award and then the 3rd place winner comes up, who I don't know. When the ceremony is over I go back to the change rooms to collect my stuff. My Mom drives me back home to my small house in Florida and I am greeted by my dog George.
"Hey buddy." I say scratching George behind the ear.
I walk up to my room and throw my bag onto the ground. Tomorrow I start training for my biggest competition yet. This next competition could make or break my whole professional swimming career. There will be many agents in the audience watching. These agents can get me opportunities to get a professional career in swimming. This next competing is going to decide my future.
