I wake up with the worst headache ever. Last night was a total blur. Ian invited me to a Halloween party. I went and his almost sister, my enemy, Dru Brown was there. My swim team mate, who I thought was my friend, betrayed me along with Sam, some girl from my History class. Alexis, well, I don't know about this new girl. I got drenched with who knows what. Ian let me borrow his coat, which I still have, I realize. I'll return it to him at school to-achoo! I sneeze. My mom walks into my room with a thermometer in her hand.
"Sweetie, I'm going to take your temperature. You don't look so good." She says. She takes my temperature. "Okay, you have a fever. I'll call in sick and stay home with you today." She says.
My phone goes off ten minutes after school starts. I reach over and grab it, prepared for the worst. Of course, Dru tagged me in a video. I type in my password and hold my breath as it loads. The video comes up and it's a video from last night of me getting, well I don't know what, poured on me. Then, my mom runs up the stairs in a hurry.
"Get in the car!" My mom almost screams at me.
"What? Mom, why?" But she doesn't answer me, so I follow her into the car.
"Anika's mom called." My mom says. Our moms are pretty close and Anika's like her other daughter.
"They're in the hospital."
"Why?!" I say, panicking.
"There was a crazy driver on Anika's walk to school, hit her. She's in a coma. That's about all I know. If you want to know more you'll have to ask the person at the hospital when we get there." My mom explains.
"Are her parents with her?" I feel my mouth move, but I hear nothing.
"Her mom was off today, so yeah she is. Her dad is on his way from work."
We pull up into the hospital parking lot. I jump out of the car before my mom stops. I run into the building, I hear a pounding in my ears. I run up to the front desk.
"Anika Georgia?" I ask the women behind the front desk.
"Family only, sorry kid."
"I'm her sister." I hear my mom say behind me. "And this is my daughter."
The women narrows her eyes at us, obviously not believing our lie.
"Alright, go ahead. Emergency room 253, right beside-" I run off in the direction of the emergency rooms. 251, 252... I stop when I come up to 253. There are doctors and nurses running in and out. I push my way through them. The second I see Anika with tubes and wires coming out of her, I feel light headed. I run up to her, her mother is sitting by her, gripping her hand.
"How'd you get in here?" She asks, surprised.
"Well, your sister and I are family." I explain. Gin, Anika's mother, chuckles under her breath.
"Hey, sis." My mom says as she walks up behind me.
"What's wrong with her?" I ask.
"Our mother dropped her on her head a few times-" My mom starts.
"Not Gin, Anika." I say.
"She's in a coma. Broke her back and neck. Doctor says she'll live." Gin says.
"You don't seem very upset." I say.
"The nurse said she might be able to hear us. So, I have to stay strong for Anika."
"Well, if she can hear us, can I talk to her about a problem?"
"I don't see why not." Gin stands up and gets off the chair. I take a seat.
"Hey, Anika. Dru's not getting any better. She posted a video from a Halloween party when she dumped some stuff on me. Ian invited me. He gave me his coat. Anyways, I need to talk to you. When you wake up that is." Suddenly I hear a loud, obnoxious voice talking behind me.
"Anika! Oh my gosh! Bestie!" Dru's voice says behind me.
I turn around and see Dru come up to Anika's side. Behind her there is a camera crew.
"This is my best friend, Anika. I was there when she got hit. I tried to save her, but it was too late!" Dru lies through her teeth. I know for a fact she takes the bus.
"Oh my goodness! What is she doing here?" Says Dru facing me. "Jordan Lee from the Electric Eels competitive swimming team! She's the evil witch that pushed Anika in front of the car!"
I gasp.
"You lier, you little-" A beep cuts me off and I look back over to Anika. A little gasp escapes her lips. Then, I'm pushed back in a crowd of doctors and nurses. Anika's awake.
