A wave of calmness washed over me as I stepped out into the fresh air.

A light breeze could be felt wisping here and there, and the moon, beautiful as ever, was peeking out from behind a patch of clouds. Though everything was dark behind my house, I was glad about it. At least no one will be able to tell Lightning and I were secretly home.

Everyone was asleep anyways.

It's been a few hours since the 'incident' upstairs. We haven't talked about it and I noticed neither of us tried mentioning it.

Was this all a mistake to him? In his eyes, was I just another girl he could play? Was he trying to distract me from the tie-breaker race?

Could my life get any more complicated?

"Here."

Lightning appeared behind me with the purple popsicle I requested. He had his own; a red one.

Of course, it was red.

For the next ten minutes, we stood there in silence while eating the icy treat.

It wasn't awkward or anything, it was quite nice. We stood almost touching, brushing against one another from time to time.

I should just enjoy this while it lasts.

We didn't speak to each other the whole time we stayed outside. I found that weird because just an hour ago we were playing board games and scrolling through Insta, laughing at posts to pass the time. And all of a sudden it's silent again.

I look at Lightning. His face was straight; unreadable. He was gazing at the sky and the desert in front of us.

I wonder if he's thinking about what happened earlier.

I blush at the sudden warm feeling in my chest. I remember the light pink marks that were left on my neck. They're still there; I checked in the mirror before coming out here.

Life had a habit of kicking my ass. Sometimes in a good direction, and sometimes in a bad one.

I'm a light sleeper; waking up just after falling asleep is its own nightmare.

I picked my head up to see what was causing all the creaking on the stairs, but all I saw was darkness. My eyes needed to adjust for me to see my own blanket on me. And the skylight wasn't helping much.

When I stood and walked to check the hallway, I physically jumped and hit the door with my bad arm.

Lightning was standing there like a fucking creep, his fist just a few inches away from the door frame, looking like he was going to knock. I rubbed my arm, trying to check if my wound wasn't bleeding. But in the dark, it wasn't easy.

I silently walked over to my lamp and turned it on. My bandage was clean, so that was a good sign.

Then I turned back to the creep that was standing at my door. He was wearing sweatpants and a white shirt with his big 95 and lightning strike on the front.

"It's like 3 AM Lightning. What?"

He took a step inside, and as he was going to say something, he didn't. McQueen walked backwards out of my room.

"Sorry, sorry, never mind." I heard him say. "Goodnight."

And that was it.

I heard the stairs creak as he walked back down. Then, a lot rustling on the couch.
