"I have to work with that."
Lightning, Mater, and I stood before Bessie, the giant, bustling tar machine. Deep black tar spilled over the side, falling to the ground. The sun behind us gave it a colorful shine. Holographic almost.
It was a good thing we kept Bessie in an area where no one drove. The tar would ruin everything.
"You make it sound like it's a bad thing!" I said in an excited tone. Though many may see it as a burden, working with Bessie is definitely hard, but rewarding in ways. Mater seems to think so all the time; he's practically jumping for joy right now.
"Oh, I don't know, maybe because it is?!" Lightning put his face in his hands. I stood next to him, shaking my head. Has he never actually worked a day in his life?
Uncle Hudson joined us. He stood straight, crossing his arms. "I'm hereby sentencing you to community service. You're gonna fix the road under my supervision." He glared at McQueen. I had a very strong feeling that my uncle didn't like Lightning. At all.
Lightning's jaw dropped, "You're crazy! This whole road? With that attached to my car?" He groaned loudly, just like a child having a tantrum.
I once again slapped the back of his head.
"Will you stop doing that? It's not enjoyable." He said, annoyed, then fixed his hair.
Lightning and his hair, match made in heaven.
"I'll stop doing it when you stop refusing to do real work." I placed a hand on my hip, me now being annoyed, and pushed a finger to his chest. "Now, until you fix the road, I'm not teaching you my sweet moves. Actions come with consequences."
He huffed, looking to one side of the road, then to the other. The look on his face screamed 'are you serious, do I really have to do this much', but he said otherwise, tilting his head down a little to look directly at me. I still had my finger on his chest. "I wasn't refusing to do the work, I'm just saying. Point A to Point B is a long way, and I'll have... Bessie attached to me. How long is that even going to take?"
The side of his face brightened in the sun. He looked at me with a type of emotion in his eyes. I just couldn't figure out what it was.
But it looked nothing like hate or sadness.
I could also swear I saw his face turn a little red.
Looking at him now, right in his eyes, as Sally had said before, and I hated to say it now, Lightning was attractive. I was so close, but far enough so it didn't seem weird for anyone who was looking at us. He had freckles that dotted his nose, and the smallest scar under his lips. I blushed, hoping it wasn't obvious.
But I didn't like him...
Right?
And even if I wanted to, I couldn't.
My mind was getting the better of me.
I back up and let my uncle answer. I don't exactly trust myself to speak at the moment, given to where my thoughts just roamed.
"Three and a half days." He said.
"Three and a ha- Oh, haha, good one," Lightning laughed unsurely. Mater and I cringed, knowing my uncle was completely serious.
The four of us fell silent. No voices were heard except for the townsfolk in their shops.
One thing McQueen doesn't know yet is that Doc Hudson never jokes around. Not when it comes to his town anyway.
