POV: The year is 1952 in Juniper Florida.
And you are a nurse that never let's your guard down until these two come along.
————
Opening the car door to let a rush of light morning spring air hit your face. Stepping out of the vehicle, you brushed the imaginary wrinkles out of your uniform. Attempting at looking your best and keeping it professional.
You soon found yourself at the main entrance. Pulling open the door you were met with what your next eight hours would consist of. Patients being rushed down each hall, other nurses pushing carts to different rooms. As each one passed they gave an occasional "good morning, nurse y/l/n." You giving them a smile and a nod in return.
You put your belongings in the nurses station and grabbing a chart. As head nurse you are to check on all patients on your floor and to make sure the staff is doing their job. It was routine. You head down one of the halls before a younger nurse tapped you on the shoulder.
"I'm sorry to bother you." She looked scared of you. Maybe it was your title and higher authority, or simply because she thought you were more intimating then the other staff. "I was instructed to inform you about the new patients this morning." She handed you their charts
You didn't understand why someone else couldn't do it. After all you had an multiple lists to check off. "Isn't there someone else who can assist you?" The younger nurse shook her head. "Use your words." You didn't see her gesture, your eyes were glued to the papers in your palms. "No ma'am." Her voice was shaky.
"Very well. I suppose this can be a learning opportunity." You walked down the rest of the hall with your heels tapping the tile floor. The other nurse followed like a little puppy. You skimmed over said patients information, reading room 3b held them.
Skipping over a few rooms, you now stood in front of 3b. The younger nurse looked like a helpless child standing behind you. You had came into work later then usual, so of course you didn't hear all the commotions concerning what was just on the other side of the door.
"Get it together." You whispered to the woman. You didn't bother taking a glance at her name tag; it wasn't important to you. You opened the door after knocking and a faint "come in." Was announced.
There was a curtain surrounding the bed. How odd the sight was, usually this only occurred in the ER. This was a different floor of the hospital. You slid the curtain to the side revealing a case you've never laid eyes on, in your entire career.
The nurse assassinating you ran out of the room, like she was going to be sick. You should never be a nurse if you have a weak stomach. Your eyes settled back on the patient. You failed to read the part on their chart Conjoined Twins.
The two girls kept looking at you waiting for something to come out of your mouth, perhaps offensive or upsetting. But you didnt say anything, you just looked at them with curious eyes and a smile. Being in charge you never seemed to relax your face around anyone, but they were different.
"Hi, I'm nurse y/l/n." You reached out for their hands. "Bette, and this is Dot." The girl on the right introduced the both of them. Bette seemed to be a warm hearted type, Dot on the other hand wouldn't attempt at making eye contact. She had guilt building walls in her eyes.
"What can I do you two for?" You rested their chart on the foot of the bed as you sat in one of the chairs in front of them. "Well, you see miss." Bette began to talk but Dot tried to stop her. "Shes trying to help." Bette whispered to her other. Her accent was showing through. "She's right. I cant help you if I dont know what's wrong."
Your face softened more, you crossed your leg over the other waiting for one of them to explain. They went on to tell you that Dot tried to kill Bette by stabbing her, so they'd finally be separate. Their own individual. As they went on, you began to feel sorry. Those girls didnt choose this life. They didn't ask to be connected as a whole and have no choice but to do everything together.
You patched up Bette's wound and admitted them for a few days just to make sure there was no infections, but mainly for Dot. You didnt want her going back out there with plummeting mental health. Though you understood her reason for the action and her confession to having depression, it still was wrong. You just wanted to help.

The next few days you returned back to the hospital per usual. You noticed more cars in the parking lot then normal. You walked in the building, heels still clicking faster each day. Not bothering to pick up a list from the nurses station you went straight to the twin's room.
Loud voices were heard coming from the other side. This has been happening all week and you were sure it was the same people. You swung the door open. Yep, same damn people. "What have I told you?" You acknowledged everyone's face. The twins were on the verge of crying, multiple cameras flashing pictures, and the Governor interrogating the two. Everyone in the room stopped what they were doing to draw their attention on you.
"You got some killers on your hands miss y/l/n." The govenor stepped towards you resting a hand on your ass, before you stepping a dramatic distance away from him. You looked at the clock on the wall. "Oh look at that, visiting hours haven't started." The man scoffed. "So will you please show yourself out. Before I have to call someone." Your tone was back to it's regular agression.
The man cued everyone to leave with him following behind giving you a side eye. You dragged Bette and Dots suitcases from under the bed. "What are you doing?" Dot asked. "They're going to back tomorrow, and everyday after until they get something out of you." You began to pack the their clothes they came with.
"So I've called an old friend. Her name is Elsa. She can help you." The girls looked at eachother skeptical. But what did they have to loose? Their mother was dead so they couldn't go home, and frankly the public wasnt very accepting of them.
They nodded along with your plan.
You helped them out of the bed, leading the three of you out into the hallway. When the coast was clear you took them through the back entrance. When you crept the door open a small breeze and a shine from the warm sun hit you. Oh the trouble you would be in if anyone saw you. The possibility of being fired didnt nessasairly matter right now. A part of you really felt for the girls, you weren't really sure why but all you knew is that they deserved a chance at being treated like people.
Or that's what you thought would happen.
A light blue car pulled up before you. You grabbed the girls' hands "be safe okay?" You handed them their suitcases and opened the car door for them. Elsa gave you a wave and a small smile after she took the cigarette out of her mouth.
"Thank you y/n." They both said before driving off into the distance.
