It was that September to remember when I first met him. It was just an ordinary night in the club when somebody had the guts to talk to me. I was at the brink of letting go some big dreams at that time and I considered my future uncertain. To be exact, I was at the crossroads of my life. Yes, our business was doing great for three years now but I knew I could do better. Yes, we are on top as per our city's standard and neighboring areas but what if we go farther and further?
Recalling that first moment of meeting him, it was just zilch! I didn't look forward to seeing nor meeting him again. It never crossed my mind that that one night would lead to sunny days and exciting nights in my once gloomy life.
Then we met again. I was not friendly to him and he suddenly became unfriendly to me.
"Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Gutierrez! I'm very, very sorry for coming in late. I stayed up late last night and I forgot to turn my alarm on. Promise, I won't do this again," I hastily explained to the 70-75 years old couple.
"Oh, no. There's nothing to worry about, dear. At least I had some date time with the love of my life. Right, honey?" Mr. Gutierrez said stroking the hand of his wife.
"Perfectly correct, love," Mrs. Gutierrez returned the sweet gesture.
Oh, they just looked so cute. How did they manage to keep their love burning for fifty years?! That rarely happens these days of break-ups, annulments, and divorces. Will Lance and Criselda also end up this way? I doubt!
"So, we're here this morning to choose the menu for your wedding reception as well as the cakes," I declared opening my fat little notebook. Fat because they are full of to-do lists though little.
"I think we should be doing away with too much pork, dear. Our guests are mostly dual citizens so pork will be no good to them," Mrs. Gutierrez suggested.
My phone silently beeped. I just got a text message from an unknown number.
"Well of course, Ma'am. We do have considerations for those who are strict in their food choices. But what's dual citizen, if you don't mind?" I asked out from curiosity.
"It's Filipino citizen and senior citizen," Mr. Gutierrez chuckled.
I faked a laugh alongside him but Mrs. Gutierrez heartily laughed. Maybe that's why they last this long. Silly little jokes are being appreciated.
My phone silently rang this time. I put it on hold.
"Well then, let's have fish kebabs for starters, clam chowder 'coz it's generally safe from allergies, fresh garden salad, steamed breast chicken with asparagus as main course, and tiramisu for dessert. Would that be alright?" I suggested.
"Sounds great, dear," Mrs. Gutierrez agreed.
"Please don't forget the wines and champagne. Kindly include whiskey for my kumpadres too," Mr. Gutierrez added.
"Noted, sir," I jotted it all down on my notebook.
My phone silently beeped again so I opened the text message. It said that he was Lance, he got my mobile number from our secretary in our shop, and informed me that Criselda wanted to see me. I just put my phone down raising an eyebrow.
"Now with the cakes. Our supplier makes the most creamy ube cake in town," I bragged a little.
"But let's not make it all ube-flavored, dear. Let's also have chiffon, chocolate, and marble cakes. Yes, correct. Let's have it four layers," Mrs. Gutierrez said dreamily.
"That would be great, Ma'am. Lots of choices to offer to our guests," I approved.
"Oh, here goes our grandson," Mrs. Gutierrez exclaimed as she saw some sort of sunshine approaching us.
"Did you park the car safely?" Mr. Gutierrez asked the boy as he claimed his seat on our table.
"Of course, granddad. I always do," the boy assured.
"Dear, this is our grandson who also turns out to be our very skillful driver. He's my favorite boy in the whole wide world," Mrs. Gutierrez proudly announced squeezing the cheek of the boy.
After depositing my notebook, pen, and phone without texting back Lance insidemy bag, I turned and got surprised with the boy Mrs. Gutierrez was referringto. It was the boy from last night. It was Tom. But the unfriendly Tom this time.
