Rider's P.O.V
                              "What?" I asked, scowling.
His face paled. "Nothing. I didn't say anything." He said with a clenched jaw.
"You know about my parents?" I asked trying to control my temper.
"I don't know what you're talking about." He spat.
"No!" I screamed. "You can mess with me all you want, but don't withhold information about my parents from me!" I snapped, tears staining my cheeks.
He closed the space between us and wrapped his arms around my waist. "I'm scared, Rider." He whispered.
I cried into his shoulder momentarily. "Scared of what?"
"Telling you the truth." He kept his voice low and soft.
"Why?" I looked up at him.
He looked worried. His forehead creased, causing lines to wrinkle his skin. "I don't want you to hate me."
"Why would I hate you?" I asked confused and a little dazed from his fingers fiddling with my hair.
He sucked in a quick breath of air. "Don't deny it, because I know you were listening in on me and Cairo talking, but remember that girl that he mentioned?"
I nodded. "Yeah, what about her?" This wasn't making any type of sense to me. What would she have to do with me? I mean, I didn't even know her.
"I was the reason why she died." The leaves around us began to stir with the night wind. I watched Roux as his eyes trailed along the woods. "We should get inside."
I followed him inside silently, trying to make a connection between me and that girl Aria, but I couldn't remember anything detail about her. I vaguely remember reading about her death in the newspaper. Roux shut and locked the door once we were comfortably in. He whirled to face me.
"How are you responsible for her death?" I asked when I'd built up the nerve.
He gulped. "If I have to explain, you must know the whole truth." He rubbed his hand along his jaw, frustrated. "Aria was apart of a secret society known as the Adumbration."
I felt my eyebrow raise as confusion pulsed through me. "Adumbration?" I asked a little lightheaded.
He nodded. "It means that they protect the world from the evil creatures that lurk in the darkness."
I shook my head. "Wait, you mean like Shadow hunters?"
"Exactly." He made an uncomfortable face.
"So she hunted vampires, werewolves, and pixies? That kind of stuff, right?" I asked, making sure.
                              "Yeah." He sounded defeated.
"Okay, so what does that have to do with my parents?" I tried to keep the irritation from my voice, but I couldn't help myself. Roux just wasn't making any sense.
"Well, see, that's we Aria and I both come into play with your life." His eyes lowered to the floor. "Aria was suppose to protect any human that was in danger of those creatures or any mythical creature for that matter."
                              "Okay?" I egged on.
"Well, she started spending lots of time with Cairo and the other hunters didn't agree with that, so Cairo told me to hide her and protect her until he could find some place for them to escape together."
He paused for a moment to make sure I was still with him. "But news had gone around that your parents were making deals and promises they couldn't deliver so Aria had to go and fend off your family. I don't know how, but she talked me into driving her around and searching for your family. We were on the highway when we saw creatures attacking your parents, the two guardians that followed us are probably the highest ranked hunters here and they were there that day trying to fight of the creatures."
I stepped closer to Roux. "What happened?"
"A truck rushed down the highway and smashed in to your parents car. They died instantly. One of the guardians missiles backfired and shot at me. I tried to get away in time, but it hit us and Aria lost her life. I don't think Cairo has ever forgiven me for that."
I covered my mouth with my hand to keep from gasping. "Oh, my gosh!" He nodded, but kept his eyes low. Than I realized I missed another thing. "Wait! You said you were tied up in this too, I mean, why else would those guardians be chasing us?"
His eyes shut. "Because they're trying to save you from me."
                              "Why would they do that?"
"Because it was my family that was attacking yours." He sighed.
I shook my head. "Why would they?"
"Because your parents sold you to my father." He glanced up, his eyes watery.
                              "Why would....what?" I asked exasperated.
"They sold you because they had nothing left." He explained.
"They wouldn't! They loved me!" I defended. I tried to remember where I was that day...I think I was with one of my old friends that had moved away, but suddenly I couldn't recall. Roux didn't speak. "What would your family have done with me, huh? Are they creatures? Is that what you're trying to say?" He nodded. "What are you, then? What the hell are you, Roux?" I cried.
He had spoken so softly that I wasn't sure he'd spoken at all until his eyes met mine. "A vampire."
