the pelting of small rocks against his bedroom window woke topper up from his once peaceful sleep.
he'd grown accustomed enough to the sound and the company that followed,
that he merely opened his window and went back to bed.
when he heard the sounds of footsteps hitting his bedroom floor,
he expected the usual routine of y/n l/n:
coming in to escape her lonely house,
making herself comfortable on his couch after refusal of the bed,
and soft snores that would rise in the air.
but instead,
he felt the mattress sink beneath added weight,
and to his rising surprise,
y/n was now straddling his waist.
"w-woah,"
topper said,
his heart thundering inside of his chest at this new side of y/n.
their friendship had hardly extended past casual hugs,
much less this lustful position and the passion lit in her eyes.
"what's wrong, topper?"
she crooned with a seductive grin pulling at her lips,
leaning forward to rest her forehead on his.
topper looked to see her hands were resting against his chest,
carefully and slowly clawing at the cloth there.
"don't pretend, topper. you've thought about this for years...no?"
topper's breathing hitched when she brushed her lips against his.
his adrenaline was rushing,
pounding in his head,
and confusion was clouding his judgment.
"what is going on?"
"i want you, topper. don't you want me?"
when his eyes locked with hers,
his vision swarmed and his body became aflame with ardency.
of course he wanted her,
he'd be a fool to decide otherwise.
topper answered by connecting her lips,
feeling a rise inside of him that started at his core.
it was growing aggression that was being poured out after so long of suppressing it.
topper knew he was going to make this night count.topper sat up quickly in his bed,
looking around to find that his room was empty and always had been.
the dream he'd just had was still prominent in his memory,
along with the thundering of his heart.
"holy shit,"
he whispered to himself,
running a hand through his disheveled hair.
in all his years of friendship with y/n,
this had never occurred.
he thought he had been compartmentalizing these romantic feelings for her pretty well,
but he was proved wrong.
so wrong.
topper knew he wouldn't be able to face y/n today.
not without feeling overcome with embarrassment and anger that...
anger that it wasn't true?
he asked himself,
but only answered by rubbing his eyes with his knuckles,
freeing himself of the painful answer.
topper found his phone and saw that y/n had called,
which made him groan.
he had to call her back.
something could be wrong.
"hello?"
topper asked with the sleep still ingrained in his tone,
lying down with his eyes shut in hopes of ridding himself of the dream.
"hey, idiot boy. i'm sorry it's so early but i was just about to head out and surf before it gets crowded. you in?"
"n-no, no. i can't today. i'm...i'm sick."
"oh no! i'm sorry, top. well, feel better. i'll talk to you later."
"alright. be safe, y/n,"
he said before he could really stop himself,
wondering why he felt so uneasy about her being out by herself.
she's grown,
she can handle herself.
he reassured himself.
"always. bye, topper."
the two hung up,
forcing topper back into his previous state of panic.
he knew that to prevent further dreams like this and gain better control of his feelings,
he would have to distance himself from the girl.
he began to wonder what the longest time they'd spent apart was.
topper then realized they'd hardly gone a day without seeing each other.
they were destined to be friends when y/n's parents had befriended his.
they had gone on vacations together,
spent hours outside in the ocean together,
and found a longterm bond in their friendship.
but there had come a time where topper became blindsided by sudden fervent love for the girl,
springing up from the deepest part of himself.
and ever since that day,
his love had only deepened,
never wavered.
but he failed to tell y/n every time it threatened to slip out.
their friendship was too important to mess up over his pitiful feelings.
topper made himself busy by cleaning his room,
taking a shower,
doing his laundry,
and finding anything else to keep his mind from thinking about y/n and that damned dream.
hours had finally passed and topper gave himself a pat on the back;
his mind was no longer incessantly replaying that dream.
he even thought he could call y/n and ask her to meet him at the diner,
until a knock and a voice pierced the quiet air of his room.
"topper? i wasn't sure what kind of sick you are, so i brought you some of those chocolate filled croissants you like so much. can i come in?"
topper covered his flushed face with his hands and began cursing himself quietly.
he wasn't anywhere near being able to see y/n yet.
how could he?
here she was,
bringing him his favorite delicacy after he told her he wasn't feeling good.
she was tender hearted,
and topper loved her for it.
he just couldn't turn her away.
"yeah, the doors open."
y/n slowly came into view,
her hair still wet from her trip to the ocean and smile a radiant glow.
"damn, dude. you look like you've got a fever. all red in the cheeks."
y/n handed him the food then laid the back of her hand to his forehead then his cheeks,
making them buzz in response to her delicate touch.
"do you need anything else? medicine, water, whatever?"
"i'm okay, thank you though."
y/n nodded in response then gave his shoulder a soft push.
"why aren't you laying down? resting up?"
he laughed at her caring nature and shrugged.
"restless leg syndrome?"
"ha, ha,"
she mocked with a playful eye roll.
topper saw a swelling bruise on her knuckles,
quickly bringing worry into his entire body.
"what is this? what happened?"
he asked,
picking her hand up to examine the bruises further.
"oh. some pogues tried to snatch my board then made some snide comments."
y/n withdrew her hand back and shrugged,
as though it were the most casual thing ever.
topper couldn't help but laugh in surprise,
despite the anger he felt;
anger that those pogues would ever cross her and anger that he wasn't there for her.
"you...you're so bold. one of my favorite things about you, really."
"oh, stop it,"
she said with dramatic flair.
"you're gonna make a poor girl swoon!"
"oh, you're hilarious,"
topper said with a mocking laugh.
"i lied. you're the most cowardly person ever."
y/n and him both snickered at this.
he couldn't help but admire the way it was so easy to converse with y/n,
even through all his conflicting feelings.
at the reminder,
he went stiff and felt his core churn with rising tension.
"what's up?"
y/n asked,
leaning against his desk with a quirked eyebrow.
"what? nothing. why?"
"you look nervous."
topper waved his hand through the air in hopeful dismissal of the situation,
but he knew better;
y/n wouldn't let up.
"you're being weird...what is it?"
"y/n, seriously, i'm fine,"
topper lied while beginning to move around,
trying to channel his nervous energy into something else.
"topper?"
y/n laid a soft hand to his forearm,
stopping him from moving it any further.
he slowly met her eyes to see worry inside of them that had never been directed his way.
he was torturing the poor girl with his skittishness and obvious avoidance.
"is there anything i could tell you that would make you hate me?"
"absolutely,"
y/n answered.
topper felt his heart sink to the lowest point of his body.
"it would be 'y/n, i don't care about micro-plastics in the ocean.'"
his face fell as he melted into a soft laugh,
something he desperately needed to deliver his next few words.
y/n,
with her hand still to his arm,
gave it a reassuring squeeze as she laughed with him.
"i had a dream about you."
"oh? what happened?"
topper felt himself grow coy at the question.
he wasn't sure he could quite repeat the details,
it was much too embarrassing for him.
but it seemed his face told it all,
making y/n double over in laughter.
"holy shit, topper! no way. you had a sex dream about me?"
topper's face was drenched in blush.
"n-no! well, not entirely. i woke up before anything good happened."
"good?"
it was clear that y/n found great amusement in this,
but topper couldn't find it in him to laugh.
it was humiliating and only a shred of the true feelings he harbored for her.
when she realized he wasn't laughing along with her,
she stopped and reached out for him,
but he drew back.
"it's okay, topper. it's just a dream, you know? no harm, no foul."
topper didn't reply.
y/n raised her eyebrows and stepped closer to him,
reaching out for him before he could pull himself away.
her grip on his arm was almost peaceful.
"is there more to it?"
"i don't want to say anything that's gonna ruin us."
"so don't say it."
topper turned his head towards the girl to see a foreign gleam in her eyes that reeled him in,
filled him with excitement.
he couldn't stop himself;
topper pulled the girl in by her waist,
their lips becoming one.
she was tense at first,
surely surprised,
but melted into it and kissed him back like she'd been waiting for this moment.
euphoria filled them to the brim.
y/n's hands raked through his hair and pulled him closer if possible,
better than any dream or daydream he could have come up with.
this here,
was ecstasy in its purest form,
becoming liquid against his lips and filling his blood with warmth.
"took you long enough,"
y/n said through shallow breaths as she pulled back.
topper's hands were still snaked around her waist where he could keep her in this close vicinity.
he laughed and nodded in agreement,
laying a gentle kiss just above her eyebrow.
"no more wasted time from here on out."
"good."and it was true.
ever since that day,
since that dream had popped up in his subconscious,
topper and y/n had spent the rest of their days in a state of ravishment that would sustain them until the end of their days.
