CHAPTER FOURTEEN: TREMBLING BREATH
" maybe it wasn't, but I wanted it to be, but destiny really meant it to not happen. "
Yael was alright. Yael was comfortable. It was fascinating, it was truly great to hang out with his siblings, especially with Sophia. He didn't know at first how he would feel but now... he feels nothing but happiness because he gets to hang out with his sister without harboring any feelings for her.
He's standing right by her with Jaxon and Ryland next to them. He talked to Sophia as if he was looking out for her as this is her first time going to school physically... not just some school but it's actually college.
He felt lighter, better, warmer. He can finally be the brother that Sophia deserved, an older brother. Not an older brother who loved her, not anymore. It wasn't easy to slowly move on from her, but it was slowly becoming easier thanks to a specific someone... someone who did nothing but love him and look out for him.
Sometimes he thought he couldn't do it, that maybe he would never ever be able to stop himself from falling... and that there is no getting out of it. But she helped him, and he'd always be thankful to her.
But as he was just about to look up to see her taking notes or studying with Brent, he found nothing but her, facing Brent with a blank yet concerning expression. It was the first time that he'd seen such a face from her, something he never knew she could even make or express.
And the look on Brent's face, was nothing but a smile... a smirk.
He then had to think about Brent and his words. What did Brent do or said this time to make someone uncomfortable? He knew Brent well, he liked women and didn't care about anyone's opinion, he might be cold and stern but sometimes he could find something so interesting that he'll do everything just to have it.
That is why a lot of people think that Brent is the complete opposite of Yael himself. What had he done to her? To Diana?
What if... what if he's interested in her? In the only woman who stayed right next to him for a long time.
No. This can't be it. He can't just do that. He can't just be... be interested in the one woman that loved him and that he... he... perhaps... had feelings for.
"Kuya..."
"Uh... Sophia?" he was brought back to reality immediately, worried that Sophia might find it odd for him to stare at Diana, at a woman.
"Kanina ka pa nakatitig, may problema ba?"
Yael immediately shook his head as an answer to his younger sibling's question. He had to calm himself from these thoughts of Brent interested in Diana, not her... not Diana... at least not her. Why not her? Even after asking himself the same question many times in just a minute, he knew what the answer was and he couldn't help but stop it, he needed to avoid it... the answer.
He's not ready, not prepared... he doesn't feel that he's not ready to risk it all to be with her. Not when he knows he didn't have closure yet with his feelings for Sophia, he knew that he had finally moved on but there's still something missing... something he knew but he doesn't know how to figure it out properly.
But what is it... really? Why?
---
"Maligayang pasko po!" sabay na'ming bati sa mga magulang nila.
Malawak naman ang mga ngiti nila sa'min at tsaka kami pinasalamatan sa pagpunta sa imbitasyon nila sa party. I smiled at her, at Yael's mother and his step-father. Their mother is so pretty, I can't help but think how she resembles Yael and Ryland when she smiles... pero kapag 'di siya nakangiti, kamukha naman niya sila Jaxon at Brent.
