CHAPTER TWENTY: THE EYES
" I don't wanna look at anything else now that I saw you "
"Yung labi mo." Sophia spoke from Yael's behind making the older man turn around to face his younger step-sister with a cut on his bottom lip.
Yael was just checking his reflection in the mirror, he didn't think that the wound that Ryland had given him would give him this much impact. He could still feel it, the punch, and his words and the tears that came with it.
"Ah... yes." He didn't know how to start it, to start this conversation with Sophia knowing that she might have known that he had feelings for her too just like how his own mother and his siblings have known from the very beginning.
"Masakit... ba?" she asks with a much softer voice.
He was about to answer her question when he remembered Ryland's words about Diana and how he had hurt her. He knows, no, he knew the kind of pain he had inflicted on Diana. Ryland was right, if only he'd done something from the beginning and declined the opportunity then maybe... Diana--
"I don't know." Yael brought himself back to reality, almost choking back on tears again but he stopped himself from letting his tears escape.
Even the thought of Diana was enough to make him cry. When has he ever been like this? When has he ever felt like this, a feeling that he's about to cry every moment that a thought of a woman comes through his head?
"Narinig ko kanila Jaxon na... broken heart ka raw," Sophia sighs, and a smile comes right after.
"Mukhang 'di lang ikaw ang nasaktan, kuya."
Yael's eyes went from the mirror in front of them to Sophia who was smiling at her reflection in the mirror but the smile was... bitter.
"Hanggang ngayon... hindi ka pa rin nakamove on?" Yael asks as he remembers the first time Sophia cried inside her room as she talks about Ivan, her very first love.
He remembered it all, the moment she had broken her own heart. Sophia had few relationships before she met Ivan from her grandmother's province, but Ivan was really the first man she had given her heart to, Yael knew immediately that Sophia had truly fallen for someone good for her.
"Sinusubukan ko naman kuya, mahirap lang talaga kapag naiisip ko siya. Pero... hindi ko na siya gustong makita, gusto ko... na lang siyang makalimutan."
"You don't have to force yourself, Sophia."
"I'm not, kuya. I just have to, kailangan ko. I'm an adult now and not some girl who used to be all over this same boy, ayoko na no'n, this is my own choice. Kaso nga lang... 'di mo talaga maalis sa utak mo yung taong yun, so it's hard sometimes."
He then wondered if he had ever had an experience just like that when he was in love with Sophia. He did hide it and he never acted based on his feelings for her, he was jealous whenever she would date someone else but he never once forced himself to move on and use someone else...
His feelings for Sophia were natural, they were real, consistent, and stable.
But his feelings for Diana were growing, it was like a disease without any cure, any way out of this disease and he doesn't want a cure either... he wants it to stay forever.
He is... he is indeed crazy for Diana. That is the truth, and he was scared. Because as much as he wants this disease to stay forever, it was his first time experiencing this so he wasn't sure if it was alright to continue this.
