Ashwin took a slow sip from his glass of water, attempting to ease his nervousness.
Having dinner with Kavya and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Narayanan had to be one of the most nerve-wracking moments of his life. Ashwin's family was well-off and respected, but nothing compared to the prestige and power of the Narayanan family.
His mother's initial descriptions and Kavya's humble nature had left him very unprepared to face her intimidating parents. Her father was commanding and supremely influential, booking out a whole five star restaurant just for the four of them. Her mother was silent but dignified, clearly marking his every move. It was like an audition but much worse.
Mr. Narayanan cleared his throat.
"So, why Kavya? I hear you're the most eligible bachelor in Tamil Nadu, what made you settle down with her?"
"Sir, to be frank I had no plans of getting into a serious relationship, but I was surprised by your daughter's confident character. Kavya has her own life, her own career and her own achievements and struggles. Fascinating in her thoughts and actions. She has all the qualities to make the ideal companion and more."
Narayanan leaned back, pleased with his answer and Kavya gave him a smile. Ashwin was relieved, but some part of him wished there was more feeling in his answer. It was logical, practical and true. But it lacked heart.
"See Ashwin neriya peru kettanga yethuku oru cinema paiyanuku ponna kudukaringa nu. Especially one with no connections or background."
Ashwin cringed at his assessment of his standing.
"But you didn't seem like the rest. Very focused on your career, lots of smart decisions and a lack unnecessary drama. There's no rumours, bad habits or gossip about you. Cinema karan na you would expect him to roam around with one girl and be thinking about another. There's none of that with you."
He felt some vague guilt hearing that last line. He stopped himself from thinking about it any further.
"Thank you sir. And I know you may worry about your daughter being neglected due to my hectic work sched-"
Narayan laughed.
"Not at all, she grew up seeing my schedule which I guarantee is ten times as busy as yours. She knows how to conduct herself. I like your ambitious nature. I know you have plans to open a restaurant, sports center, charity program... our family can help you with that. We can make Ashwin a brand."
"That would mean a lot to me, sir. But I am doing those things from my heart more than anything. It's not really about me or my image."
"Yes of course, but such things need to be lucrative and profitable. Kavya herself is very sharp and trained in business, of course you know how I am. With your films combined with these projects we will make you Tamil Nadu's undisputed superstar. You have high potential to succeed in all fields."
Ashwin gulped, this was beginning to sound like a meeting with his manager more than his potential father-in-law.
Mrs. Narayanan cleared her throat, finally electing to speak.
"You've been the talk of the town since your debut, and I can see why. You make a good match for our daughter and your attitude is impressive, very humble. Politics would suit you."
Kavya giggled.
"Wouldn't he make a darling MP? Or a minister like Rajesh mama!"
Narayan titled his head in thought.
"The people's love for him is quite strong... I agree with you Nagma. But MP wouldn't be enough for him. He could be so much more than that."
Ashwin had no idea when the conversation had turned into discussing his nonexistent political career. Narayanan dabbed his mouth with his napkin.
