All A Lie part 34

B-"I'm so sorry that I'm late"

I said to Pop as I walked up to him with Harper by my side.

P-"Don't worry about it. I'll show you to Veronica's office"

He led me back to a closed door. He knocked on it and I heard a soft voice say "Come in!" He opened the door and a younger woman turned around and greeted me with a hand shake.

V-"I'm Veronica, nice to meet you"

B-"Betty...the pleasures mine"

We exchanged a smile as Pop closed the door and Harper walked out from behind me.

V-"And who is this cutie?"

B-"This is my daughter, Harper"

Harper waved a small smile to Veronica but stayed close to me.

V-"My husband and I just found out that we're having a girl"

She rested her hand on her baby bump.

B-"Congratulations. Is this your first?"

V-(nods)"Yeah, I'm a little freaked but also excited"

She walked back over to her desk and sat down in her chair as I sat down on the chair across from her desk.

B-"I felt that way with Harp. But you'll get over it a couple of months after she's born"

V-"Thanks" (smiles)

B-"Of course"

V-"Well, let's get started, shall we?"

I nodded and she took out a pen then the interview started.

She asked me a couple of basic questions, I tried my best to answer but it was hard because I didn't have that much experience besides the bar. I kept on getting really nervous, and my morning sickness didn't help at all. I was so close to sprinting to the bathroom and throwing up, but I kept myself put...until I couldn't keep it in anymore and I shot up and ran down to the bathroom.

I was debating going back to the interview, I had already screwed up and I probably wasn't going to get the job, so why bother. But I needed this job, I was on my own now and I needed to make things right so my children could have everything they need. So I got up, washed my hand and went back into Veronica's office then sat back down.

B-"I'm so sorry, Veronica. I-I just found out that I'm pregnant...and I was trying not to let the morning sickness take over me, but I failed. And I know that I already screwed this interview up, but I'm trying my hardest here and I really need this job so I can give my kids the life that they deserve"

V-(sighs)"Betty, I like you. You have all that it takes to work here...so I'll see you on Monday" (smiles)

B-"Wait...I-I really got the job?!"

V-(chuckles)"Yes, you did. There's lockers around the corner, I'll give you your key and your uniform and apron will be waiting for you on your first day"

B-"Thank you so much!"

She stuck out her hand and I took it and shook it excitingly.

V-"Of course"

I grabbed Harper's hand and started to walk out when Veronica called my name again.

V-"Oh and Betty, congratulations" (smiles)

B-"Thank you" (smiles)

Harper and I then walked out and went back to the hotel.

I was finally getting my life back together. Soon enough I would have enough money for an apartment. And to buy Harper and the baby new things. I didn't think I could do this on my own...but maybe I can, even if the throbbing pain of losing Jug still sat in my stomach all day. My heart hurts, but I can't let my mistakes take me back anymore. I have to do this for my family, and that's all that matters right now.
