We have finally arrived. I no longer feel my legs and I am very tired.
Helen cried a lot after I told her those things. She then was silent, and she doesn't even look me in the face.
Now we are about to ring my mother's friend's doorbell.
"Helen," I call for her attention before I press the bell.
She doesn't look at me, she keeps her head down.
"Helen, listen to me!" I burst out, I'm losing my patience.
"What do you want?!" she snaps, looking at me, her eyes red and swollen with tears.
"Look, I'm sorry for...for the things I said." Yes, I felt guilty right after I said them, because she has no idea how important she is to me. "My mother is here, please, I need you to behave yourself, pretending that you are happy with me."
She looks at me in silence. "Except when you tell me those things, and you hurt me to death, I'm happy with you!" she then says.
"Why? How can you be happy with me?" I ask, approaching her.
"Because I know, deep down I know."
I look at her confused. "What do you know?"
She shakes her head. "Just ring the bell, please. And yes, I'll show your mother a smile, but I want you to show me that you are sorry for everything you said."
"I didn't mean any of that, I swear to you," I tell her.
She rings the bell, which is going to indicate that the discussion ends here.
A few seconds later Stephanie opens the door, my mother's friend who is hosting her. "Harry, how are you doing?" she hugs me.
"Good, thanks," I reply cordially.
Stephanie glances at Helen, who is silent and playing with the ends of her hair. "Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Stephanie," she tells her.
Helen shakes her hand. "Hi, Helen, Harry's girlfriend."
Did she just...? Okay, forget it.
Stephanie invites us in and I find my mom sitting on the couch with Maddie.
"Hello, Mrs. Davis, are you all right?" Helen walks up to her and gives her a quick hug.
"Helen! What are you doing here?" my mother asks her.
Helen looks at me, panicked.
"She wanted to meet Madeline," I explain to my mom. Part of it is the truth.
Maddie gets up from the sofa and comes towards me. Her light blue eyes meet my dark blue ones, and she smiles at me. I haven't seen her for centuries.
"Hey how are you?" she hugs me.
I hold her tight, stroking her back and inhaling her scent. "I missed you, Maddie."
"I missed you too." Her eyes are bright and full of tears, but she tries not to cry so as not to ruin her makeup. "Who is she?" she whispers to me.
I go to Helen, take her hand and take her with me. "Helen, this is Madison. Madison, this is Helen, my girlfriend. "
Helen looks at me puzzled, she's probably thinking I'm a douche.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Harry's older sister," Maddie tells her.
Helen blinks several times as realization hits her. "Nice to meet you too."
"You wanted to talk to me right?" I turn to my sister.
"Yes, but I need to speak privately with you and Mom, please."
Maddie, our mom and I go to the kitchen, leaving Helen and Stephanie to babysit my little nephew.
We sit down at the table and Maddie takes out some papers.
"We know your father's story is unbearable, and we need to get him out of the house," she begins talking to me, and she immediately gets our attention. "Mom, you can't live with him around; you, Harry, can't let him tell you those things, and I can't stand you having to put up with it. " She pauses.
"Go on," I tell her.
"But the state can't permit to let someone like him loose."
I frown. "What else did he do?"
Maddie sighs. "Mom, do you remember when Grandpa died?"
My mother nods, a sad expression her passes over her face.
"John Davis poisoned him," she confesses.
Mom bursts into tears. "What?"
We knew Grandpa had been poisoned, but we never found out who killed him. Why would my father have to do this? Blessed is my sister, his father is a wonderful person, I wonder why my mother left him. Maybe they were too young, but everything would have been different for me.
"Yes," Maddie continues. "His prints were found on a bottle of poison hidden in our grandparents' house that I found myself in a counter."
"Shit!" I exclaim.
"I took it to forensics."
"And they understood," I continue for her.
She nods. "Your father is accused of murder. Here are the documents."
I immediately pick them up and start leafing through them. "Fuck, Maddie."
"You can go home mom, you'll never see him again."
"Have they already taken him away?" I ask her.
"Turn on the TV," she tells me.
I do it, and I put the news of the last hour.
It's all true. They are taking him away, forever.
"You see?" Maddie tells me with a broad smile.
I walk around the table and hug her harder than ever. "I can never thank you enough for that." I make a gesture for our mother to join us.
Tears wet my face, tears of happiness. It's the best day of my life.
