I forgot how hot it is here. When I wake up my covers are bunched up by my feet and I am doused in sweat.
Needing a shower I head into the bathroom. After my refreshing shower I get dressed. I put on a pair of light wash high waisted shorts and a black short sleeve crop top.
Slipping on my chuck's I check the time on my phone.
Ten a.m.
It's a Sunday which means it's Austin's one day to sleep in. I can't wait to surprise him, I wonder what his face will look like.
Rachel has probably already spilled that I am here.
When I get down stairs I have a quick breakfast with my family.
"Tell Austin I said hi." Mom says as I leave the house and head down to Austin's.
The walk doesn't take me that long, once I get there I knock on the door.
No one answers which means he must still be sleeping. I find the spare key and unlock the door.
We've been going in and out of each others houses for years.
"Austin." I call out but I don't get a response. I saw his truck in the driveway so he must be here.
I creep up the stairs towards his room.
Then I open the door quickly yelling 'surprise.'
Except I only get the 'Sur' part out before the rest of the word dies in my throat.
No.
This can't be happening, it's not.
"Ava?" He asks his tone a mix of surprise and confusion.
I want to scream or cry. Lord I am probably crying.
The girl in front of him turns her head, her raven black hair falling down her naked back.
He's naked, she's naked. There is a lot of skin exposure happening right now.
Once I snap out of my trance I run down the stairs.
"Ava wait." Austin calls out as I head to the front door throwing it open.
"We're done." I call out as I continue to race out of the door.
I can hear him still calling my name but it sounds muffled.
The walk to my house seems faster now. I think I was running.
"What's wrong darlin'?" Grandma asks as I get inside the house.
I don't answer here as I race up the stairs to pack my bag. I need to get out of here right now.
He'll find me here and want to talk. I do not want to talk right now.
Once my bag is packed, through blurred eyes I find the next flight out to California. There is one in an hour if I hurry I can make it.
I call for an uber as I head back down stairs.
"Ava what happened?" My mom asks wiping under my eyes, I shake my head, "He was with another girl." I say barely above whisper.
My grandma hisses through her teeth.
"Are you sure?" Rachel asks and I nod, "I saw them together." I say and I see my dads jaw clench.
"I'm going back to California, I can't stay here." I say and as much as I can tell my mom wants to argue she doesn't.
I give them all hugs goodbye. When I go to pull out of my grandmas she whispers, "Heal your heart so it can be open to new possibilities."
