The overfilled kitchen was encompassed with the sound of spoons clinking and hushed gossip as the group of residents, and attending, got ready for the morning. April, Jackson and Alex sat on the stools eating their cereal while Meredith, Lexie and Derek stood opposite them, some nursing a coffee while Derek waited on the toaster.

"Wait. So, the hot cop that shot the shooter is Phoebe's exe?" Lexie asked, still in disbelief of the news, and also surprised that Phoebe wasn't the one to tell her yesterday. Her question making Jackson quietly scoff to himself, only gaining Meredith's attention who sent him an amused look.

"Yep." April nodded as she brought her mug to her lips. Her upright, engaged posture the complete opposite to Jackson's hunched over frame as he bitterly grumbled over his cereal bowl.

"As in, the only proper boyfriend she's ever had?" Lexie further questioned as she leant on the counter top.

"Yes." April confirmed again, tiredly nodding.

"I mean... if you have to have one, that's a pretty good one." Lexie shrugged mostly talking to herself now.
"And he's still at the hospital?" Lexie continued interrogating.

"My god Lexie." Derek tiredly whined, throwing his head back at her repetitive questions so early in the morning.

"Why I am the only one shocked by this?" Lexie questioned as she dragged her gaze over to Meredith. Sensing her stare, Meredith nodded moving her mug away from her mouth.

"No, I'm interested." Meredith assured. "I don't think anything at the hospital could shock me anymore." She mumbled. "I just can't emote that much this early without more coffee." She added, gesturing to Lexie's own animated figure.

"Well, I knew him from when they were dating so not that shocking. And I was with her when she saw him, he was our patient yesterday." April explained.

"She didn't operate on him, did she?"  Derek asked in concern, aware of the stress that could cause.

"No, no. She left before the big stuff." April dismissed with a shake of her head and a wave.

"Did it end badly? Is it going to be awkward while he's a patient?" Meredith asked, going back to interrogating April on Phoebe's past.

"Not really bad." April hummed, looking to Jackson for his opinion since he was closer to Phoebe throughout the break up. But he didn't meet her gaze and stayed focused on his food, seemingly trying to eat it quickly so he could escape the kitchen and subsequently the conversation.
"She was just too busy. I mean we were interns. Any free time we had we wanted to sleep, and he was in training all the time." April shrugged, only vaguely sharing the reasoning Phoebe gave her years ago.

"So, bets on them shacking up while he's admitted?" Alex asked, finally adding to the conversation as he pushed his empty bowl away from him. Drawing eyerolls from around the room.
