Phoebe's shift started off by staring aimlessly at the dull grey walls of a classroom. The lights hurt her eyes, making it even harder for her to keep them open and an odor floated through the air due the large amount of people crowded in the room. Phoebe was bored and wanted to get the hell out of there. She had been dealing with patients for years, surely sensitivity training would have been more meaningful before then but now, she was pretty sure she had it under control. But she could not say the same for Yang, or Alex, or Reed, or even Charles for that matter... maybe it was a good idea.
"Uh- reaction, observation, communication. Any questions so far?" Dr Bailey asked, her tone showing that she was just as disinterested as the rest of the room.
The majority of the room raised their hands with matching displeased expressions. Phoebe was perched on a table, Jackson to her right and Charles on a stool in front of her. She let out a quiet laugh as the boys turned to each other, frowns on their faces and hands in the air.
Dr Bailey let out a sigh, before continuing, "We are doing this because Chief Shepherd suggests we brush up on our patient sensitivity skills, that's why." The hands fell back to the residents side's. "And it just so happens that this morning was a very good time. Besides, half of you were raised by wolves."
Phoebe lent forward whispering in Charles' ear. "She means you." She received a glare in return and flashed him a cheesy grin.
"Reaction. Keep your face impassive whether prompted by a patient's appearance or lab results. Facial expressions of surprise, concern, disgust, etcetera can be counterproductive."
"You suck at that." Jackson whispered to the brunette beside him, Phoebe's head whipped round to face him, her offence displayed clearly.
"I do not." Phoebe argued pointedly.
"You're doing it right now." Jackson quietly laughed.
"Well, you're not a patient." Phoebe retorted, before jokingly threatening, "Not yet anyway."
"Jokes. Don't make jokes about patients, not in front of them, not even in private." Cristina made a noise of objection, catching Bailey's attention, "Yang?"
"What if the joke is really funny?" Cristina asked, pulling laughs from the residents in the room.
"It's not." Bailey stated simply. "Neither was that one, moving one."
The lecture continued, for what felt like hours, consisting of Bailey's bored tone and a few sparse jokes from residents trying to lighten the mood; it didn't work. The lecture ended by following Bailey to the pit to meet the highly sensitive patient.
"You ready to R-O-C this patients world?" Reed teasingly asked Phoebe as they walked side by side to the pit.
A light laugh fell from Phoebe's lips as she replied. "Oh yeah, I'm feeling extra sensitive today."
