Chapter 44: Painful Truth

~ Shadow POV ~

I felt the warmth of her body slowly disappear.
Her grip around the back of my neck slowly growing weaker.
I gripped her closer to me, as if she was about to disappear.

"I'm afraid my time is up Shadow. This is a goodbye"

I squeezed my eyes shut fighting back the urge to break down and cry.
I thought I knew how painful loss can be...

But I was so, so wrong.

"Goodbye, love"

I choked out.

"Love you, forever"

She spoke so weakly, her body feeling colder, her lips turning blue.
I held her even closer to me, her chin resting on my shoulder.

"Please no"
I whispered quietly, feeling
her body slowly disappearing into the nothingness of space.

Warm tears streaming down my cheeks, my heart beating quickly and loudly, like it was about to explode.
I clutched the metal ring bracelet in my hand.

She's gone.

Just like Maria.

I'm alone again.

I slowly made my way back into the ship.
As I walked through the hallway towards (y/n)'s private room.
I hung my head low, barely even registering that someone was trying to speak to me.

"Shadow!"

I weakly looked up. Feeling slightly dizzy.

Rouge stood in front of me with a slight smile and teary eyes. Chris, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Cheese, Vektor, Charmy and Espio standing behind her by a wide window.
All of them were smiling a little.

"Cosmo fulfilled what she wanted. She's happy now" Amy spoke as she comforted Cream, who was crying her eyes out.

"Shadow?" Rouge spoke again, more concerned this time.

Walking up closer to Chris, I held out my hand to place the singular seed in his hand.
He looked at it and than back at me.
He knows what it is.
I noticed him looking at the ring bracelet I held in my other hand.
He ghasped slightly his eyes growing wide.

I gripped it tighter and walked by without another word, I squeezed my eyes again, feeling them sting a little.

"Shadow"
Rouge spoke again, softer this time.
I ignored her.

"Shadow, where's (y/n)?"
My stomach dropped. I felt a lup lodge in my throat.
My heart and my breathing quickened as I tried to fight the urge to just run away from them.

I don't think I have the heart to tell them.

I flinched away when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
Rouge stood back at my reaction. Looking back at her slightly, I lightly shook my head.
