You, Sonic, Rouge and Knuckles were waiting for the president.
He wanted to perform a tournament, to lure Eggman out of hiding.
A tournament is not going to make Eggman reveal himself to the world after escaping prison.

The president ran into the room.
"Well, Topaz? Are they in or out" He asked.

"Well, sir, they-" Sonic cut her off.
"I don't know about this plan of yours".

" This tournament idea sounds kind of screwy" Knuckles said, crossing his arms.

"I'm not sure you'll lure him out with just a tournament" You leaned backwards into the chair.

"How about you?" The president looked at Rouge.
"I might consider helping you out with this plan of yours but if I do, it's gonna cost you" Rouge smirked.

"What exactly does that mean?" The president asked.

"Well, I do have a weakness for jewelry" Rouge answered.

"I'll tell you what. If you all agree to battle in our tournament we'll offer a grand prize to the winner" A woman walked into the room.

"Whoever wins the competition gets a Chaos emerald!".
That peaked your interest.

'If we win this we'll take care of Eggman and get a Chaos emerald. That's basically a win, win'

"You want me to waste my time for one chaos emerald? Sorry but you can count me out" Knuckles frowned.

"Ah, could it be gloomy Gus over here's too chicken? I bet he's afraid, I might beat him" Rouge teased.

"Look here. I'm not afraid of anybody. Got that?" Knuckles shouted.

"It's too bad. It would've been such an existing tournament" The tv reporter Scarlet Garcia looked down sadly.

"Oh, well, if he really doesn't want to prove himself there's no use forcing him too".
"I suppose not, Mr. President" Topaz sighed.

'Why are they acting like it a big deal? Knuckles doesn't have to fight.
Although it would be beneficial...

They're all using reverse psychology.
To convince him.

"Our viewers will be so disappointed, especially the millions of rabid Knuckles fans out there" Scarlet looked genuinely disappointed, she'd make a great actress if she weren't a reporter.

"Kids who just want a glimpse of their hero".

Knuckles grumbled.

" You don't want them to think you're a big scaredy cat, do you?" Rouge nudged him.

"This will be the perfect way to prove just how tough you are.
Unless of course you're secretly a sniveling coward".

Knuckles yelled.
"That does it! Nobody calls me a coward and gets away with it.
I'll enter the competition and win the chaos emerald".
