CHAPTER 20

THE BATTLE OF HELM’S DEEP

“It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.”

― Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

When Aragorn was almost done putting all his weapons on, Legolas was behind him, he had Aragorn’s sword and was offering it back to him.

“We have trusted you this far, you have not led us astray. Forgive me. I was wrong to despair.” Legolas said honestly.

“U-moe edhored, Legolas.(There is nothing to forgive, Legolas.)” Aragorn replied, embracing the elf.

“Finally, I’m happy for the both of you.” Raenaslee said with a relieve tone.

“One chance is enough for a greater hope, you said it Raenaslee.” Aragorn said with a smile.

The sound of shuffling boots came into the quiet armory. They looked and saw Gimli holding up his chain mail. He dropped it and it fell to the floor. “If we had time, I’d get this adjusted. It’s a little tight across the chest.” He said.

Then they heard the sound of a far off horn. “That is no orc horn!” Legolas said.

Théoden walked down the stairs and onto the landing. “How is this possible?” he asked.

“I bring word from Elrond of Rivendell. An alliance once existed between Elves and Men. Long ago we fought and died together. We come to honor that allegiance.” Haldir said, Raenaslee, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli came downstairs.

“Mae govannen, Haldir! You are most welcome.” Aragorn said as he ran down the stairs and hugged the surprised elf.

“Haldir!” Raenaslee shouted and hugged him, and then they pull away.“It is good to see the Elflove again.” All the elves turned as one and bowed to her. Then Haldir and Legolas gave each other a shoulder greeting.

“We are proud to fight alongside men once more.” Haldir said to Théoden King.

Saruman’s army approached, they could see the glow of their torches and heard the grunts and metal clang of their armor. Gimli, Legolas and Raenaslee stood on the wall waiting; Gimli fidgeted, for his head was well below the wall.

“You could have picked a better spot, I cannot see a thing.” He grumbled. Aragorn came up behind them and Gimli looked up at him, “Well lad, whatever luck you live by, let’s hope it lasts the night.”

“Your friends are with you, Aragorn.” Legolas said he looked at Aragorn then looked over Gimli’s head at Raenaslee.

“Let’s hope they last the night.” Gimli said as he looked up at them.
