Abuja, Nigeria.Seated in the executive chair, Jalal watched the presentation his employee was projecting with keen interest until he felt his phone vibrate, followed by a flurry of notifications.
He picked up his phone to see that they were all debit alerts. He chuckled, knowing it was Jalilah who was likely on a mission to empty his account. "Let's see if she can manage it all in one day," he thought.
"Young man, can you concentrate here?" his father, Alhaji Abdurrahman, cautioned, and all eyes turned to Jalal.
"Sorry, Dad," he replied. Just as he was about to set the phone down, another alert popped up. Jalal smiled, silenced his phone, and returned his focus to the presentation.
Meanwhile, Jalilah and Banina were on a shopping spree, purchasing both essential and frivolous items. They paused at a restaurant for lunch before diving back into their adventure.
"Jay, don't you think it'd be thoughtful to get him something too?" Banina suggested as they exited their sixth mall.
"Hmm...you're right. What do you suggest?"
"Maybe a watch or a cap?"
"Sounds perfect." Jalilah smiled.
"Ninah, is he really this loaded?! We've spent a fortune, and he hasn't even called or messaged me to slow down. I might have underestimated him!"
"He ought to be. He's been working at the family company since he was twenty-three, and he's thirty now. You couldn't expect anything less."
"You're right, Ninah. You know what I'm thinking?" Jalilah gave a wink.
"Do tell."
"Maybe we should get ourselves and Nabeel the brand-new iPhones."
"That's bold, Jay. But honestly, I'm over using the same phone for a year and a half." Banina sighed, glancing at her slightly cracked iPhone.
"Let's go! Maybe this will finally catch his attention." Jalilah laughed, and they headed to the car.
"To the phone store," Banina instructed the driver.
"Mission accomplished for today!" Jalilah grinned, admiring the brand-new iPhone in her hand.
"And still no call from him after all we've spent. Amazing," Banina said.
"Really, what special thing did you do to him, huh? Enlighten me!" Banina teased, winking.
"Wallahi, nothing," Jalilah laughed. "I just woke up and found a note with his credit card, telling me to buy whatever I wanted."
"He's in love, Jay! Ya Jalal is totally in love with you."
"No way," Jalilah laughed, shaking her head.
"He is! Why else would he hand you his credit card, knowing you'd go all out? That's not just a husband duty!"
"I don't think so, Ninah...he was just fulfilling his husband duties by giving me his card."
"Handing over his credit card isn't exactly a husband duty. Keep kidding yourself, but you'll see what I mean soon enough."
They dropped Banina off before Jalilah headed home.
"Thanks," Jalilah smiled, taking the shopping bags from the driver.
Safiyya quickly came to help with the bags, and together they walked inside. Jalilah's steps faltered when she saw him seated at the dining table, calmly eating.
