Kuroo put his phone down.
Why did I call him? It had felt like an instinct. But it had been nice hearing Kenma's voice again. Even though he had only been home from school one day, it felt like forever since they had talked. Kuroo was happy Kenma had appreciated the snacks he got him. He was also hoping Kenma wasn't too mad about him entering his room while he had been sleeping. But Kenma picking up the phone was progress.
At least he doesn't hate me. That's a good thing. Kuroo looked at the clock. It really was getting late. His mind kept saying he wanted to go over to Kenma, to make sure he really was okay. But he would probably be even more weirded out.
I should sleep. I promised to walk with her to school tomorrow. He tried sleeping. But pictures of Kenma kept flashing in his mind.
I am broken.
The next day Kuroo didn't feel like he had slept at all. His vision felt all blurry when he got out of bed. It was as if his brain wouldn't shut off for even a second. His morning routine went on autopilot. He brushed his teeth, put on his school uniform, and headed out. It felt like his brain wasn't turned on yet.
"Kuroo?" That voice.
Kenma? He shook his head. It was as if he hadn't woken up before now. Kenma was sitting in his bed, looking at him with the strangest look.
"Why are you here?" Kuroo quickly looked around in a panic, making sure he really was awake.
"I-I-" he stuttered.
How did I end up here? I was supposed to walk to school with her. God, am I in trouble.
"You look dead, Kuroo." Kenma had the tiniest smile on his face. Kuroo felt his whole body go warm. He stared down at the floor as he felt his face blushing.
"I am so sorry if I woke you up, Kenma. I barely got any sleep, and I suspect I went on autopilot." Kenma chuckled.
What a lovely sound.
"You better start walking if you want to get to school on time", Kenma pointed to the clock next to his bed. Kuroo started nodding a lot.
"Yeah, I- I really should. Again, I am so sorry. And rest up! Get well soon!" He quickly closed the door and ran outside.
What the hell was that? How did I end up here? Kuroo got lost in his thoughts. He couldn't remember much from the morning, up until Kenma had said something. His eyes had been red.
Has he been crying?
"Kuroo!" Someone came running up behind him.
Kenma?! His heart was racing. But as he turned around, he saw it was his girlfriend running after him. His heart quickly slowed down.
Why do I feel disappointed? What's wrong with me? He stopped in his tracks to let her catch up with him. She held her hands on her knees to get her breath back. Kuroo kept scratching his neck nervously.
What a terrible boyfriend I am.
"I am so sorry for not meeting up with you," Kuroo mumbled, not knowing what to do with himself. She chuckled.
"No, it's fine! I noticed you seemed a little spaced out, so I ran after you." She seemed to have gotten her breathing back under control.
"But at least we can walk together now!" She grinned and started walking. Kuroo half-smiled before following her.
"It's impressive you walk to school this early every day", she said, letting her gaze rest on Kuroo. He again started rubbing his neck, looking away.
"Oh, it's become ahabit, really", he mumbled. She continued talking about all the homework shehad time to do, but Kuroo spaced out halfway through, not able to pay attention.

Kenma couldn't take his eyes away from his bedroom door. Just a few moments ago Kuroo had been standing there. Why had he shown up here? It had been over a week since they had walked together to school.
Autopilot. Was his first instinct to go here? He had looked super tired as he had entered the room. Is he not getting enough sleep?
Is he also having a rough time? Kenma laid down with his face into the pillow. It had been nice to see Kuroo again. His lips formed into a smile.
He had come out of instinct. He quickly shook his head.
That doesn't mean anything. We've been walking to school together for years. But he could feel the smallest of hope building up inside him.
This is bad. He opened his game to try distracting himself. But he kept glancing to his door, with the smallest hope that Kuroo would be standing there.
His head really hurt. He had not been able to sleep after Kuroo had called. Probably because he had slept so much. His eyes stung. For some reason, he had started to cry when Kuroo had hung up. He hadn't cried in years. It still felt like he had a fever as well. He grabbed the cloth from the floor and went to put some cold water on it. As he was standing by the sink, he felt dizzy. It had been a while since he had tried to stand up. He dragged himself to the door while holding the cloth to his forehead. His heart started beating faster when he got to the door. The image of Kuroo standing in the doorway had gotten stuck in his mind. As if Kuroo was standing right outside the door.
He is at school. Stop being ridiculous. He opened the door and made his way down to the kitchen. There was a note on the fridge.
-I've put lots of leftovers in the fridge, try and get some food. Also remember water. Xoxo Mom.
I can't promise anything. His appetite had dropped after he got sick. He took out a small bowl of rice.
Kuroo would've been mad if I didn't try to eat, at least.
