Is he safe, Leo?

"Leo." I whispered across to him. It was two am. I had just woken up, the bed saturated with something that I couldn't distinguish in the dark.

"Leo"

"What is it Kate?" He muttered, grabbing the duvet and pulling it over. Anger filled me, knowing that he didn't care if I was okay.

"Wake up and help me, Leo!" I cried out in desperation. My tone must have scared him a little since he suddenly sat up and faced me.

"Alright I'm up! What is it? He rubbed his eyes to make some sense of the crepescule.

"What do you need?"
He slapped his hand onto the part of the sheet near my body and quickly moved it to my thigh.

Gasping, he lifted his hand to eye level, trying to figure out the dampness.

"Turn the lamp on, Kate." He instructed in a sober manner. "Now"

I promptly did as I was instructed, watching as his eyes widened at the sight of the bed.

"Kate-"

I began to weep at the anguish that I had caused, my entire body convulsing as I stared at the blood stained sheets.
I was twenty weeks pregnant.

"I'm so sorry, Leo."

"Hey, its not your fault, sweetheart. Its just something that happens, okay?"
He wiped his hand on the bed, freeing it of the blood.

"But it's not just something that happens!" His attempts at soothing me were hopeless. I was too upset to think rationally.

"It happens to bad people Leo! Bad! Bad! Bad! People who nature deems to be awful people. I'm an awful, awful person." My voice was hoarse

I knew I was spiralling at this point, I was hitting myself and sobbing as my nails dug into my face. Acting quickly, he took my wrists and moved my hands to his shoulders.

"Katie, you're not awful, okay? I-
Okay let me put it this way."

He turned to face me and cupped my face in his hands.
My nails were digging into his shoulder as cramps stabbed at my lower abdomen.

"When you go the park and you want to pick flowers, which ones do you choose?"

I stared at him blankly. What has this got to do with losing a baby?

"Alright, do you pick the colourful, bright ones or the wilting ones?"

"Colourful." The taste of tears fell onto my tongue. Since I felt parched, I chose to savour it.

"Exactly. God likes to take the brightest beings to heaven earlier. That's why people die, my darling. Our baby was just too pure for this world so God took him to be an angel."

"That's really nice. Our baby is an angel, Leo."

"He is." Leo wiped the tears from my cheeks and pulled me into his chest.

"And do you want to know something?"

"What?"

His thumbs caressed my hair, pushing it back so he could whisper into my ear.

"He is watching over you, Katie. He is proud of you for being so strong."

"I'm not strong, Leo."

"I hate that you can't see what I see."

"What do you see then? Because I see an emotional wreck."

"Well I see a wonderful, beautiful, talented woman. My wife, who is going through one of the most emotionally difficult things a woman could ever go through and doing a splendid job. And I'm ever so proud of her."

"Do we have to go to the hospital?"

"We probably should, to make sure there are no complications."

"I'll ring an ambulance."

He shook his head. "I'll drive you."

"Alright. Can you help me get dressed?"

"Of course."

An hour later, they wheeled me into a room for testing. It was a rather boring room, all of the walls were white and there was no window to bring in any natural light. It was awfully antiseptic in its scent and horribly unwelcoming.

It was confirmed that I had a miscarriage, which only made me more upset.
It was now five am. Both of us were exhausted from the eventful night. We were now in a cold hospital room, only having one another and a thin, sterile blanket for warmth.

"Darling?" I stroked his stubble and watched as he spoke, still half asleep. It was mesmerising to say the least.

"Yes Katie?"

"Are you mad at me?"

"Of course not. Why would you think that?"

"Because when I woke you up, you were angry."

"Oh, love, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it. I was just tired."

"But you didn't have to be mean, Leo."

"I know. I had no right to be mean to you, Kate. And I'm sorry. It'll never happen again"

"You promise?"

"I promise."

"Do you mean that?"

"Have I ever not meant an apology or a promise to you?"

"No."

"Exactly. Now Katie, try and get some sleep for me okay?"

"Only if you sleep with me."

"That's what I was doing, until you woke me again to ask if I was mad at you."

"Oh."

"I'm kidding, come here"

I shuffled towards him. Silence sucking the light out of the room.

"Hey, is Samuel safe in heaven?"

"Samuel? You named our son?"

"The profit Samuel was destined for a holy life right from the birth. He is an angel and so is our son. It was just a thought I had when they were running the tests, I'm sorry."

"No, its okay." His voice was reduced to whispers now. "I like the name"

"So is he safe, Leo?"

"Of course he is. He's a Winslet, he has your mother to protect him in heaven."

"Oh, darling. I'm sorry."

"Don't be, I told you, it's not your fault."

"Sorry. I'll go to sleep now."

I laid my head on Leo's chest and closed my eyes, allowing myself to drift off to a deep slumber.

"Wait!" I sat up and looked at Leo.

"What?"

"What about Mia, Joe and Bear?"

"They'll be okay on their own. Mia is twenty now and Joe is seventeen. They can take care of Bear for a little bit, I'm sure."

"I'll shoot them a text quickly."

"No. You're going to go to sleep. I'll send Mia a text."

"You need to sleep too." I protested.

"I'll be fine. Go to sleep, Katie. You're alright."

"Thank you. Goodnight.

"Night, sweetie. I love you."

"I love you too"

My consciousness faded to an end and I fell into a deep slumber, my entire weight on my loving husband.
