The night brought such a silence that the crackle of the campfire was all that could be heard, a natural music in the duvet of night. Flames sent scarlet sparks dancing into the breeze.

Kate and Leo sat close on a mossy log, their faces toasted warm, mesmerised, relaxed. The smoke twirled heavenward charming their worries away.

It was only five pm, the sky was only just darkening the part of the woods they were staying in.

"Leo darling, I'm sure you have another shirt to wear"

"I'm not cold." Leo protested, stoking the fire using sticks from the pile beside him.

"Or shy, apparently" She dissolved into a puddle of laughter, almost falling off the log.

"I wouldn't want to deprive you of the view, Katie "

Standing up, Leo flexed his muscles in such a way that his abs were on full show. Kate's hand drifted to hide the new flush on her face.

"How modest." Her breath caught in her throat, leaving her unable to distinguish whether that was due to the smoke from the fire or Leo.

She decided on the latter.

"Oh Leo, stop that"

"Why? Are you blushing?"

"No, I-" Kate protested, turning her face away, still hiding the redness of her cheeks.

He gasped "my Katie is blushing. Mhm.."

Now, he was just teasing her, and she knew it.

"Katie, Katie. My Kate. Are you blushing?"

"Maybe I am. Why do you care?"

He sat back down on the log with her, this time turning to face her, not caring if the fire fizzled out. He could always start a new one anyway.

Leo took her face into his hands, stroking the colour on her cheeks with the pad of his thumbs.

"Are you okay? You're not yourself."

"Yes I am. I'm just boring old Kate, the usual."

"No, no. The Kate I know doesn't act like this. Come on, what's wrong? You can trust me."

"I know I can." Kate responded, her eyes locking with his.

"but I can't tell you what's wrong"

"Why not?"

She exhaled and looked out over to the tents.

"Its complicated, darling."

"Nothing is too complicated, you can tell me."

"You'll laugh at me."

"No, no, no. I won't. Please, tell me."

He quickly manoeuvred himself in front of her on the log, and rested his hands on her arms.

"Promise?"

"I promise."

"Alright. Leo, you are the love of my life. I don't know what I would do, or where I'd be without you by my side. You are the best laugh, the best hug, the best kiss, the best shoulder to cry on. I'd happily marry your arse tomorrow If it meant never letting you go. I love you too much to let you go, as a matter of fact."

"You would marry just my ass?"

"No! I-"

"I know what you mean Kate. I know. Why did you never tell me you felt like this?"

"Is this you telling me that you don't love me back?" Tears began to gather in her eyes.

"Of course its not, silly." He brushed the tears from her cheekbones as they fell.

"Listen. You are every thing and more to me. And I'd happily marry your ass tomorrow as well."

"You would?"

"Of course. Who else would I want to be married to? You're my soulmate."

"So is that it then, we're engaged now?"

"If that's what you want then yes."

"That's what I want."

As their lips press together for the first time in forever, the entire world fell apart. It was just Kate and Leo in that moment, no body else mattered.
