Fields of Gold.

A light breeze trickled across the field, waving wands of gold dappled barley, catching the January sun, towards us. It was cold, but so bright, and she was so radiant, her hair was in a messy plait which was more golden that the sunlight, and her cheeks were rosy, pink like dahlias. She was wearing a thick plaid cardigan. She paused for a moment, letting our hands drop between us as she looked around contemplatively.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" I whispered, following her gaze as she slowly turned to me, wrapping my arms around herself. Her hair cascaded out of the plait, and she ran her fingers through it, freeing it around her shoulders. I took her hand again, rubbing my thumb over her knuckles, and slowly sank into the floor, bringing her to rest on my chest, her hand running over the hair escaping from my shirt.
"Will you stay with me?" She asked, squinting her eyes from the sunlight. "Will you be my love?"
I nodded, kissing her forehead. "I'll never leave you sweetheart."

We layed in the grass for a while, sunglasses on our closed eyes, our breathing light and quiet, as we tuned into the wisps of the wind's music. The sun was forgotten, she was brighter, warmer, more majestic anyway. Our limbs were tangled in the barley, our shoes thrown off somewhere around us, and her cardigan wrapped around our torsos. The winter breeze wrapped around us, but her arms around me made it cosy like warm summer evenings, like a candlelit meal, like a cup of tea - one she makes after I've just got off a ten hour flight to see her.

I leant down, looking into her eyes. They were hidden with sunglasses but they were blue. So blue. I moved her hair away, and cupped her face, pressing my lips to hers. Her body moved upwards, and she wrapped her arms around my neck, sighing quietly as I moved to her neck. She then pulled away, darting her eyes between mine.
"I'll always love you, Leo"
"Promise?"
She closed her eyes, and nodded, smiling warmly. "You want to keep walking?"
I sat up, cupping her face with one hand and helping her up with the other. The wind had slowed, but still the barley swayed as she adjusted her cardigan over her shoulder, and began running through the field, her fingers brushing through the ears of barley, a soft laugh echoing through the air.
"This is so fun!" She exclaimed, turning to face me as a halo of her golden hair whirling around her face. "It's like we're walking in fields of gold."
I exhaled, taking in her radiance as I caught her up, reaching for her hands, and hearing her breaths mingle with mine. "One day, I want to bring our children here." I whispered, watching her mouth curve upwards into a smile. She bit her lip, her eyes welling with tears.
"Hey, what is it? Do you not want children?" I moved closer, cupping her cheeks. "Because I understand if you don't---"
"No it's just." A silent laugh escaped her lips, and she reached into her pocket, handing me a thin white stick. "In 8 months time we can."
I blinked, taking in the sight of the pink plus sign, and gasped, my eyes softening. "Y-you're pregnant?" She nodded, tears soaking her face.
"How are you feeling?"
"Sick, sore, but happy, really happy."
"Well you're glowing." I beamed, watching her face soften as I wiped the tears away. "I'm so happy sweetheart, thank you."
I pressed a kiss to her forehead and wrapped my arms tightly around her.

"Mia... Mia come here!" Kate coos, kneeling down in the barley, She is so radiant, her hair is in a messy plait which is more golden that the sunlight, and her cheeks are rosy, pink like dahlias. She is wearing that thick plaid cardigan she wore in January, but her shoulder was out, the thin band of her vest top exposed. Mia was born almost a year ago... actually tomorrow is her birthday, and I think I've fallen in love with Kate even more. I capture the moment on a camera, standing to the side of them, watching as Mia takes hesitant steps towards Kate, celebrated by almost mimed clapping, eyebrows raising.
"Did you get it on camera, Leo?" She whispers, scooping our daughter in her arms and standing up.
"Of course." I whisper back, wrapping an arm around her waist and lightly pinching Mia's cheek
The sun is going down. We have sunglasses on, and our daughter in our arms. It's been many years since we spent summer this happily, standing together in a field of gold, the wind blowing westwards, as we walk, our camera and our daughter in our arms. We capture the fields in a photograph, the sunlight glaring across the screen. I take a photograph of her walking with Mia in the field of gold, a smile splashing warmly across her face, as she beams into the camera. The fields of gold are beautiful, but she is more so.
