"Uncle Leo, I miss mama. When will she be back?"

"Soon, Mimi, soon. I promise." Leo ruffled Mia's hair to sooth her.

Kate was supposed to be back a day ago from visiting her parents for the weekend as it was her mother, Sally's birthday.

Meanwhile, Leo had happily stepped in to babysit her two year old rather inquisitive daughter, Mia.

He sat on the couch, his left arm resting on the armrest, his right leg crossed over his left and Mia laying across his lap, her head in his chest.

She had called him just before she began the forty four mile drive back from Reading; her voice cheery and full of excitement to see them.

Yet now as he sat at home watching ice age for the fifth time that weekend, fear washed over him. He began to chew his nails and bounce his leg, something which Mia thought was a game until she set eyes

onto his face. His forehead gained lines only obtainable by some sort of stress or anguish.

"What's wrong, Leo?"

"Nothing, sweetheart. It's nothing."

"Do you have an ouchie?"

"Yes." He lied, unscrewing his face and smiling at her "but I'm fine, don't worry about me."

"Do you miss mama?" She fondled his face, her small eyes darting across his nose.

"Yes, Mimi. Alot. Do you?"

"Yeah." She sighed, melting back into his chest.

"Do you want to call her?"

"Yeah," She relished his scent, just as Kate would and that made Leo smile a sad smile as he took the phone from his back pocket.

He dialed her number and it immediately went to voicemail, forcing him to whisper under his breath.

"Goddamnit Kate."

He tried again and again and again. All four times it went to voicemail.

"Fuck." Another under the breath murmur; quiet enough so Mia could not hear it.

"Right, come on, Mia."

"Why isn't she answering, Leo?"

"I think... I think that her phone is off, Mimi" He smiled, trying to convince Mia and himself that Kate's phone was just turned off. Yet believing oneself in a situation like this is never an easy thing to do.

He picked her up and fastened her cardigan and her shoes before doing his own coat up and slipping on a pair of trainers.

"Where are we going?" She asked as he buckled her into the car seat.

"I don't know yet."

He soon decided to make light of the situation; Mia didn't have to worry about the wellbeing of her mother, that was Leo's job.

"We're going on a road trip! You can look out for all of the pretty ducklings"

"Ducklings! I love ducklings, Uncle Leo."

"I know," He closed the door and got into the front before switching the engine on and fastening his seatbelt.

At five pm, Leo's car advanced down the vast paved road that connected London and Reading.

Mia sat in the passenger seat, in her carseat, her arms folded in her lap and a pout embossed onto her lips. Her eyes were fixed bitterly onto the blurred scenery as it passed her scape and she was twisting her hand and stealing glances Leo beside her as a sense of desperation to see Kate and get out of the vehicle as soon as she could washed over her.
