"Kate, have you got the keys?" Leo asks, pacing the kitchen for his wallet.
"Of course I have. And I suppose you are expecting me to drive again aren't you?"
" Yes. you're no good at map reading. Come on, let's get going."
And so, Kate drives down the narrow English paths, slightly zoned out as she thinks about the relationship she was in. She loves Leo, don't get me wrong but sometimes, especially after a long period of intense filming abroad, things between them can get difficult. Exhaustion takes over the mind and makes people react harsher than how they intended to.
" Left, turn left down here."
Kate turns right, not listening to a word her husband was saying; she was too immersed in thought to do so."Stupid woman, I told you to turn left, now you have turned right!"
" Who are you calling a stupid woman? I am your wife!"
"Never mind about that!" Leo yells back, slamming his hand against the door. "I would have thought by your big age you could have at least, I don't know, learnt to have told your left from your right - it's a very simple fact you know."
"Like you have learnt the simple fact that evening meals don't just make themselves! I have to slave over a hot stove all day so you can eat your food and yell at me for absolutely no reason."
" Where are we? We're getting lost and it's entirely your fault!" He dismisses her comment and glares at her.
Suddenly, the car jolts forward, perhaps as if they have hit something. Kate doesn't notice it but rather chooses to focus on the tears in her eyes.
Leo had never treated her like this before. What gives?
"Now look at what you've done! You've fucking scratched the front of the car. How ridiculous is
that. Haven't you got your glasses on?""You know I don't wear glasses." Kate gritted her teeth " Besides, it was an accident....I didn't deliberately decide to hit the front of the fucking car, Leo."
"What are you doing now? Can't you control this vehicle? You are useless, totally
useless""That's it. I'm not driving any further." She pulls the gearstick and turns the engine off.
"I have had about enough of your insults." Kate stands up and gets out of the car before slamming the door behind her. She rushes out, sobbing into her hand, not noticing that Leo has followed her out.
"You never stop nagging. EVER! It was the same the day we drove to LA. It was all nag, nag, nag from you!"
"But that was over 3 years ago. Haven't you forgotten that?"
"No I haven't, and you said then that I was a careless and slow driver. When will I get a break from all this nagging?"
"Nothing has changed there then has it? I don't know how you managed to hit the front of the car just now."
"Like I don't know how you managed to break the curtain rod last week- how careless is that, hmh? Kate countered, knawing on her lip, practically forcing herself to stop crying.
"Don't you dare start on the curtain rod! I only opened the damn curtains because you were going on and on about your fucking mother and I wanted some peace and quiet!"
"Peace and quiet my arse!" She snapped her head round to face him, tears still streaming down her flushed face.
"You are the one who plays your god-awful music so loud that we had that visit from the police asking us to turn it down because the neighbours had complained. I have never been so embarrassed in all my life."
"Talking about embarrassment; how do you think I felt at our Christmas party
last year when you told my dad to go and take a walk outside to sober up?"Now you are being unreasonable! Just like Ned! I'm done with your bullshit Leonardo. Stay away from me"
She walked away from him, lighting a cigarette. He followed her and slapped the stick from her lips before placing his hands on her shoulders, glaring into her eyes."Like you are when you take more than half your share of the duvet each night and I end up getting cold." He slightly shook her, fighting the urge to kiss her as guilt washed over him.
" And you made a great hole in my best shirt when you ironed it seven years ago. I'll never forgive you for that."
Both of them knew that they were being childish yet they couldn't help but carry on arguing on the side of the road. Maybe.... this could be the end of their anguish; maybe this could be the turning point in their relationship... but for better or for worse? Only time could tell.
Later on, Leo had taken control of the car, not wanting nor trusting Kate to drive back home. She sat in the backseat pouting towards the road outside the window like a child after deciding that she didn't want to be next to him and his outrageous temper.
When they'd arrived home, they sat in silence, watching television. No hugs, kisses or even comments about the awful evening entertainment on ITV were exchanged. The atmosphere remained bitter and blanketed by a cloud of hatred.
Though, realistically, Kate didn't hate Leo and of course, Leo didn't hate Kate. It was just something that all couples went through. Wasn't it?

That night, Kate had settled into the guest bedroom, feeling more fragile than ever before. She hated feeling this way and wanted it to stop. The demons of her mind lurched from the darkness and consumed her happiness piece by piece, as if wanting to cut it off completely. And as she slept, the demon's shrill screams rendered her melancholy; the fear of falling out of love with Leo paralysing her, sending shivers through her entire body.
A soft knock came from the door, so quiet that it was almost trapped within her sleep.
The rap came again, louder this time, with a timid voice asking to come in."What do you want, Leo? Why aren't you in bed?" She half yells, sitting up on the bed as Leo perches at the edge of her mattress.
" I'm so sorry Kate. You didn't deserve any of this today. I was just overtired and took my anger out on you. I love you so much."
Kate cocked her head, raising an eyebrow into the darkness. "And how do I know I can believe you? You might lash out at me again. And it scares me, Leo. " Her voice wavered as he moved up to the top of the bed and pulled her into an embrace. She never pulled away.
"Look, all I'm trying to say is that I don't like fighting with you and I can't bear to be without you, not even for the night, clearly." They both scoffed slightly and looked at eachother, the love in their eyes still there, saying more than their words could ever say.
"I'm so sorry, Kate. Will you forgive me?"
Kate sniffled and moved towards his chest. "I suppose I'll have to; you can't sleep without me."
And so, he pressed a kiss against her head and carried her to their room, where they slept soundly for the remainder of the night.
