My heart brimmed with anticipation as Leo and I stood outside Mia's charming house. The sun cast a golden glow on the vibrant flowers in the garden, mirroring the warmth within our hearts. Our son, Bear, tugged at my hand, his excitement barely contained. Mia's laughter echoed from inside as she swung open the door, her eyes sparkling with joy and mischief.

"Mum! Uncle Leo! Bear!" Mia exclaimed, her voice filled with affection. “Come in! Joe is in the living room.”
We stepped into their cosy living room, the comforting scent of freshly brewed coffee mingling with the sounds of cheerful chatter. Mia's husband greeted us with a warm smile, their love for each other evident in their intertwined fingers.

Walking through the front door of Mia’s cosy house, the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread and wildflowers greeted us. I stood beside Leo, his arm splayed across my shoulders as we greeted Mia and her husband. Sunlight flooded the room in a soft amber glow upon the tastefully decorated space. As we settled into the familiar embrace of family, my gaze met Leo's, our unspoken connection conveying a shared excitement and a hint of nostalgia. I bit my lip as he sat Bear down between us, not moving his eyes from mine.

Over a delightful meal, Mia's eyes twinkled with a mixture of nervousness and joy. The anticipation was palpable, like a delicate dance on the edge of a precipice. We exchanged knowing glances, silent secrets that only we could read. I smiled at her, encouraging her to speak her mind, to tell us what she was scared to say.

Finally, she took a deep breath, her voice quivering with emotion. "I-I have something incredibly special to share with you all," she announced, her eyes shining with anticipation. Leo, Bear, Joe, and I leaned forward, our hearts fluttering with anticipation, waiting for the news that would forever change the fabric of our family. She took her husband's hand under the table and he smiled at her, reassuring her that it was okay, that there was nothing to be scared of. The soft lines on his face reminded me of Leo’s and his smile was the same. Warm, homely. Loving.

"We’re having a baby," she declared, her voice tremulous yet filled with an indescribable happiness. The room fell into a hushed silence, the weight of Mia's words sinking in. As the room erupted in congratulations, my heart brimmed with emotions—joy for Mia's journey, a sense of déjà vu, and an overwhelming love for my daughter. I stood up and ran around the table to hug her, and Leo did the same. For a moment we just hugged her, together. I pressed kisses into her hair, moving it behind her shoulders. Leo shook her husband's hand, patting him on the back and I sat back down, my face still stretched into a warm smile. Joe and Bear took their turns: Joe’s congratulations calm and collected and Bear’s excited and curious.  But amidst the collective celebration, I found myself sinking into an avid flashback—a glimpse into the pivotal moments of my own pregnancy.

I found myself standing in Leo’s old flat in Los Angeles, the scent of familiarity and excitement permeating the air. Leo, unaware of the life-altering news I carried, wore a smile that reached his eyes as he offered me a glass of wine—a customary gesture that now felt tinged with significance. But I declined, a flicker of nerves betraying my composure.
“Hey, are you okay? It’s your favourite wine, Katie.”
Words suddenly betrayed me and I sighed, opening and closing my mouth, soft breaths pouring through my parted lips. I decided to just show him.

I revealed four positive pregnancy tests and Leo's expression transformed from curiosity to a bewildered mix of astonishment and joy. He pulled me into a tight embrace, his warmth enveloping me, and together we embarked on the journey that would forever bind us.
